I think Matt Flynn was a better quarterback than Jamarcus Russell while at lsu, and I STILL think Flynn is the better quarterback. Flynn is still on an NFL roster, and Russell is not. I've never questioned Russell's physical abilities. What I've always questioned is his ability to lead and I've questioned whether or not he has what it takes "between the ears" to be a truly great quarterback. While he was at LSU I never thought he had a good understanding of the game and how to play the quarterback position. He just looked confused out there sometimes. He would wow everybody with an awesome play and then make a really stupid mistake. Flynn was a much better leader and understood the game more so I would rather have him anyday

I'm still flabbergasted when people say this.

Been waiting to say this one? When Flynn starts for an NFL team then we can compare the two. AS of right now JaMarcus isn't on any roster, but I have a feeling that he soon will be. AND it'll be at the same position as Flynn (backup QB).

These are all things that are in your head. It's your perception that maybe a little off. There were quite a few NFL scouts that could see JR's talent level and also thought he had it "between the ears".

Example? Gotta give me more than just one or two.

Again, there is no proof of this. It's just your perception with nothing to base it on.
In summary: JaMarcus' numbers while at LSU is the only proof I need to see that he excelled in the places you think he failed. Also, if I were you I wouldn't go around saying that JR isn't on a roster and MF is on one as a reason to think MF was a better QB in college. You maybe eating your words come football season. Then again maybe you should just drop that whole point as it has nothing to do with either QB's ability to play while at LSU.

Do you think a lot of these numbers would be different (smaller) if we hadn't changed offensive coordinators when we did?

No kidding. What was the statement he was making? Promoting a friend's company on the biggest national stage he could think of.. THAT'S his crime?
Not sure about others, but for me it wasn't as much about the chain and the coat and the shades, as it was about his "super cool" attitude he emoted. The other QB who interviewed had several nice things to say about being at the NC Game. He was looking forward to the contest.
JROC, on the otherhand, just kinda of stood there and mumbled yes and no. Regardless of how he meant to come across, he came across as a pretentious jackass who was too cool to speak to the reporter.

I can't figure out what is worse, pissing away your talent on drugs or just being lazy.

Yea, Rain man was smart too, but not sure I would want him to run my business!!!

JaMarcus Russell aka "Jonathan Sullivan" becoming a Saint. He had arguably the most talent in LSU history surrounding him at in 2006. Any LSU fan could tell you how he did very little to make LSU better then. If Matt Flynn is the QB in 2006, LSU could have possibly been NC in 2006 and 2007. JaMarcus couldn't manage a football game if his life depended on it.

I was a huge JR fan while he was the QB for our Tigers. One of my best friends at work who is black is a huge Oakland Raiders fan, he threw a fit when the Raiders drafted him and he told me that he was not a good QB. I argued with him all the time and told him that he was wrong and that Jamarcus who make him eat his words. Well, I am the one looking wrong right now. But to me that does not change the fact that he will be remembered as one of the greatest QB's in LSU history. I would love to see him continue his career somewhere else but if I were him. I would just kick back and enjoy the millions that I have made.

JaMarcus Russell is the prime example of too much money, too young. I'm not going to sit here because of his NFL failures and completely downgrade everything he did at LSU. I don't want to get in to that.
I remember when LSU got JaMarcus. LSU was going after QB Rob Lane (who eventually went to Ole Miss to be a TE). Late in the recruiting process LSU got Russell. It was awesome. He was a giant and had such potential. And in practices he was hungry and he got better and better. (But man did he sometimes make some silly throws. 2006 at Florida 23-10 loss) For some reason JaMarcus, with his huge contract thought he was already something. He thought on athletic ability alone he could be successful in the NFL. He thought he was big stuff.
Right now he's an embarrassment to LSU. It's embarrassing to see this great QB turn into such a lazy player who is happy winning 4 games a year as long as he gets to go to Vegas frequently.
Maybe something triggers inside of him and he gets motivated again. But right now that looks unlikely.

The guys main argument is he's the biggest bust ever because if how much he was payed so I can assume that if a future #1 pick has similar or less success than Jamarcus, he will automatically become the biggest bust ever, correct?
Not just what he was paid, but was product was offered based on pay. Raiders paid JR 40 million dollars and used a #1 pick on a fat lazy human being. Ryan Leaf was a bargain compared to JR.
And if he wins 10 Superbowls for another team he is the biggest #1 pick bust ever. How are you able to log on a computer and not comprehend this DGB? Do you share your kool-aid recipe with others?

Just in case you haven't realized, stats lie sometimes. Jamarcus had two first round draft picks, a third round draft pick, and a young Brandon Lafell at receiver. He had wide open receives to throw the ball to all the time. In 2007, Flynn had less weapons to work with on offense and a lesser defense and he still won the same number of games that Jamarcus won in 2006. Leadership abilities are one thing that contribute to this. Flynn never lost confidence and we were always in the game. The only 2 games we lost were triple overtime games in which the offense scored a whole bunch of points, but the defense let us down by giving up a ton of points. That is not Flynn's fault. therefore, i like Flynn better. I know you have the right to disagree with me though and i respect that.

Jamarcus had the most talent surrounding him I have ever seen on an LSU team.
Posted on 5/7/10 at 4:49 pm to RogerTheShrubber
I agree totally. That's why i think he might get too much credit sometimes and I think Flynn gets too much of a bad rap even though Flynn did just as much with less talent.
Posted on 5/7/10 at 4:57 pm to cbree88
I am not gonna belittle what JR did because of the talent, he still was a great LSU QB. Flynn had ample talent as well, but the '06 team was the msot talented IMO in watching LSU football since the '70's

Imagine how awesome we would have been that year if Flynn was anywhere near as good as JR was.
I agree. If Flynn had JR's physical ability coupled with his work ethic we could have had the first pick in the draft for two consecutive years.
However, if Flynn had JR's work ethic, coupled with his physical limitations, we would have had to depend on RP in 07.
