Jake Peetz made Derek Carr a good QB. And the MVP favorite when he was in Oakland.

Many of you don’t know about this. But in 2016 Peetz was assistant QB coach for the Oakland Raiders. In 2016 as the season went on Carr turned into the MVP favorite for the Entire league.
Carr didn’t win the award ultimately because he had injury problems than broke his fibula later that season. Peetz become assistant QB coach in 2016 but he was on staff as offensive assistant in 2015. Carr has the most TDs of his career through those 2 years.
And than Peetz became full time QB coach in 2017.

2015: 32 TDs and 13 ints
2016: 28 TDs and 6 ints (Potential MVP year)
2017 22 TDs and 13 ints (year coming off serious injury).

Those years were arguably Carr’s most consistent play. As of even now he has yet to reach those high of TDs in 2015 and 2016 after Peetz left.

Just sayin.

Jake Peetz was going to be Josh McDaniels OC in Indianapolis before Josh changed his mind on them.

Considering people in the NFL want Carr to get “back to that level” like 2015-2016. I would say so.

I don't think Derek Carr was an MVP favorite.

At the time in 2016 people regarded Carr as the MVP. Some people argue he should have won it.

Here was a poll back in 2016 by espn

Thanks. I just went and looked at the voting. He did get 6 votes that year.

How do we know for sure he was a big contribution to Carr's development? Any history of him doing that elsewhere? Comments from the coaches/players? Or is it just attributing it to his success by seeing he was there when it happened. Big difference.

He went from the clear cut winner to tied for third for missing one game?

My memory is obviously shite

Peetz may turn out to be an excellent OC. But the lengths some of you are going to make it out like this is a 100% home run hire are absurd

He was injured late in the second to last game of the season and finished a VERY distant 3rd in the MVP voting (6 votes) behind Matt Ryan (25 votes). And it would not have matter even if he didn't get injured. Ryan threw for 1000 more yards; had 10 more TD's and had a six point hire completion %. The last two seasons have been Carr's best as a pro, having a 4-5 point hired QB rating than his 2016 season. shite, using Derek Carr as the barometer it appears LSU may have hired the wrong "senior offensive assistant." Is the Raiders current senior offensive assistant available? Did we we ask him?!!!

Again, Peetz could and hopefully will be a tremendous OC. He's never been one, nor called plays, so none of us can say with any degree of certainty whether he will or won't be. But suggesting that a "senior offensive analyst" may have been the biggest reason for Carr's success (it couldn't have been the fact Carr, by that point had more experience as a NFL QB, right?) is hysterical

How about we just give the guy his shot to prove his ability come next fall rather than try to nuance stats and leap to absurd conclusions to "prove" why he will be the greatest OC in LSU history...or worst OC in LSU history

*sigh* I never once said Peetz would be a good hire or “homerun hire”. Never said he would be a bad one either. I listed stats of what he accomplished with Carr when he was there.

No. You listed Derek Carr's accomplishments and suggested (insinuated) Peetz was/may have been a big reason for that...with no evidence/justification for that opinion other than he just happened to be the "senior offensive assistant" at that time.

Peetz was promoted to "QB coach" in 2017 and Carr had one of his worst seasons as a pro. If Peetz gets the "credit" for 15-16, shouldn't he get the "blame" for 17?

Point being, the causation argument is silly...in either direction

Kind of like how much of an impact can a passing game coordinator have on revitalizing an entire offense?

I mean Carr came off a pretty bad injury.
I will give him (Peetz) the benefit of the doubt there.

And it’s not a silly argument because I’m not making an argument. What am I arguing? I said Peetz made Carr into a good QB/ MVP favorite which is all true.

It’s just stating what Carr did with Peetz. And that he was pretty successful when Peetz was there. Kinda Blossomed him.

Your argument, position, however you prefer to term it, is "Peetz made Carr into a good QB/MVP favorite". You propose it as a fact...when it is really just an opinion based upon the fact Peetz was an offensive analyst at the time. That success could just as easily be attributed to the OC or QB coach at the time. It's just that neither happens to be the new OC at LSU

Same could be said for the OC and QB coach. Carr also regressed in the one season Peetz was the fulltime QB coach.

I'm not saying Peetz is a bad hire. It's just a baseless position to state that Carr's success, or subsequent regression, is directly correlated to Peetz

And if I’m remembering correctly didn’t the Raiders have a bunch of key injuries that season? I remember Carr carrying a short handed team and still getting them into playoff contention causing big optimism for the following year.

Derek Carr is still a good QB and was in college as well.
