I am a redneck. I keep thinking it should be Weeb. But that is because I am incapable of sounding names out right.

I am pretty sure they asked the young man how to say his name

Not in my part of the country..
How do you pronounce "Hebert" in your neck of the woods?

It's obviously pronounced "Hee-burt" based on how it's spelled, right?

Nope. Its web-ber.

Derived from the German Weber, and massacred by the French in Louisiana like many German names were at the time. German immigrants were mostly illiterate farmers, and the French priests kept most of the records back then.

If his family pronounces it Webb, it's because they are tired of having to correct people who pronounce it wrong.

I am so sorry to have offended you all with my naivety. My intent was not to come across as a know-it-all like Ryan3232 is suggesting, but to maybe gain some insight on why this young man was being referred to as Webb. Anyone that is familiar with St. James Parish will concur that Webre is two-syllable in our neck of the woods. Sounds like, WEBB-UR. I guess you're never too old to learn something new. Obviously, for reasons unknown to me, this young man's family has chosen to reduce the name to one-syllable.
One can never fail in an attempt to gain knowledge from this board, as this posting has proven. Thanks to all of you who responded in a constructive way. And to Ryan3232 I cannot thank you enough for the ridicule that you have bestowed upon me. It has made me a stronger person.

My paternal grandpa is a Webre from Vacherie. I don’t see that spelling very often.
