Actually, while odell was here playing football he said numerous times he preferred odb because thats what his dad was called. Obviously at this point in his career he is obj.

People say ODB for several reasons.
One, as you mentioned about the rapper, is that he's from New York (the rapper), where ODB currently plays for the Giants.

Nicknames are given. They aren't decided by the player (unless you're Matty Ice).

I’ve been hearing OBJ/ODB arguments since he first started catching passes at LSU. To me they are interchangeable.

You mean when they say "the rapper?" and you have to try and not look like an idiot so you then say OBJ.
If anything, ODB (not the rapper) would be OBJ's dad.
