Is the MBB best lineup a 4 guard lineup with Chest, Fountain, Miller and Collins low?

We normally get our rebounded no matter the lineup.

We played well with the 4 guard lineup last night but pulled away with 3 guards and Miller and Chest on the floor.

Our best lineup is still Collins and chest at the 4/5
But the 4 guard lineup can help alleviate (hopefully) the offensive droughts we have. So it's definitely something we should look at the rest of the season.

On a side note, we have been running the 4 guard lineup since the 3rd week of the season. Up to 4 or 5 minutes at a time. It can be effective in short spurts, especially if we are playing the bigger guards, ie 6'3"×2 abd 6'5"×2.
Personally I prefer a traditional lineup but we don't have a true SF at this time.

It should depend on the opponent
Collins is not a good rebounder. His value is on defense and offensively around the rim. He has clearly done good work developing his shot as well.
Chest is our best rebounder, miller can spell him, but chest is a bit more athletic if you are looking for higher tempo. Chest is also a bit better defensively.
Fountain can get hot occasionally. But he should have sparing minutes. He doesn’t have the best hands, so he is a bit turnover prone, and he gets sped up a little too easily.
If you are running a 4 guard lineup, Bailey needs to be one of them. He is the most physical and most willing rebounder we have from the guard. He just doesn’t need to be the primary ball handler/distributer in the half court.

Yeah, I think Bailey gets too much heat from some. He's not necessarily great at anything, but he does a lot well. He passes well. He rebounds well for his size. He's a willing defender. He can handle the ball a bit. And he's a relatively crafty scorer around the rim. On a better coached team he would be the quintessential "glue guy". You like him in the game as a facilitator to guys like Carter, V. Miller, and others.
Givens still getting so many minutes is still curious. He's bigger than both Sears and Williams, and probably more consistent in that you know what you are going to get from him. The problem the "known" is not that special. Sears is capable bad plays and a bad game. But he's also capable of going off on a big scoring night. Williams can be reckless. But he's also active an willing to try to make things happen. You may have less of a chance of the really bad with Givens. But you also have less of a chance of the really good with him too.

When Bailey is trying to create offense he turns it over too much. I think McMahon has done a better job of late of running the offense away from players weaknesses.
Personally i think bailey should be on the wings and corners exclusively. He shouldn’t have the ball free throw line extended. He’s a god slasher, and it probably wouldn’t hurt to ah w him run the baseline more for spacing and movement.

I think only time will tell - in fact Saturday will be a very good test of that. Better competition that could possibly make us pay for playing four guards much more so than OU or South Carolina.
But it appears we move better an more efficiently offensively with the smaller lineup....I say appears because I do think there is an element to the competition that makes it look better, but still give our boys some credit.

He’s a freshman. Sears is a senior. This season’s all but over. Preparing for the future. Keeping talented freshmen on the bench is an easy way to get them to hit the portal.

This season is over. Givens is a freshman. More minutes will hopefully make him more comfortable & capable of producing “really good”.

Totally agree. LSU gains nothing from playing Sears 30+ mpg at this juncture in the season. Might as well give Mike Williams and Givens as much live game action as is possible right now.

Yes that is the perfect lineup, but I don’t think the SEC or NCAA will allow LSU to play with 8 players on the court at the same time. But a lineup with 4 guards AND 4 bigs would be ideal.

Florida is probably the most balanced team in the SEC...maybe the nation. They don't really struggle in any area. That's why they are 10-2 away from home. The good news is LSU is probably playing the best they have all season. The bad news is so is Florida. Starting with the win @ Auburn they have been dominant in the last 4 games. Florida has three excellent guards, but match them with really good size in the frontcourt. LSU's guards may be able to hang with Florida's guards, to some degree, at home. It's the frontcourt where Florida will have a huge advantage. The only thing LSU does better than Florida is block shots (and not by a wide margin). I don't think it is any coincidence LSU was able to play better offensively vs. Oklahoma and South Carolina because neither are great rim protecting teams.
A 4 guard lineup could benefit LSU because one of Florida's bigs would have to defend a guard...or they would have to sub out a big. The flipside is that will expose LSU to Florida's size. MM will have to play matchup and LSU's bigs will have to at least, as much as they can, bother Florida's bigs. In the backcourt LSU will likely get some open 3 looks. They hit them last night (including Miller, who is not a good spot up 3 point shooter). They will HAVE to do it again. LSU's defense, while not awful, is unlikely to shut down Florida, and LSU's bigs aren't going to have a ton of success scoring at the rim. Outside shooting and, potentially, FTs will likely be LSU's only path to a massive upset victory

No one is saying he shouldn't play at all. But if you are going to play, no matter your record, you should play to win the game. Givens giving 26 mostly mundane minutes isn't a huge benefit. Somewhere in the range of 15 spot minutes is enough to continue his development, but also get more benefit in the individual game from guys like Williams and Sears.

Make him enter his name into the transfer portal as soon as it’s available. And doing so in favor of playing a 5th year senior, in hopes of going from 15th to 14th in the SEC, with nothing to gain or lose bc we’re playing ranked teams who will probably beat us regardless, & Woodward already said he’s keeping McMahon & spending more money. There’s no reason to play Sears honestly. At this point it’s about retaining as many good players as possible. Best way to do that is let them play.

Givens isn't difference maker. Under McMahon or another HC. I can't keep up with the arguments. The roster has no talent!!! We need to retain as much of the (ostensibly) bad roster as possible!.
Chest, V. Miller, and Collins are the high level athletes you want to keep. R. Miller, while not great this season, has some traits to develop. You keep him too. Everyone else is replaceable. That's not to say you should want them to leave, but they aren't worth trying to sacrifice wins for the vets you have busting it this year. If LSU is going to continue on with this waste of time, then put this "sudden new influx" of money to work in the portal and flip the roster. Keep the high level athletes and go get more.

Might sound dumb, but in addition to just giving g the freshman minutes. I think givens is in there because of his size, strength.

Agreed unless Giving grows by leaps and bounds he is not a good player. Not sure how his ranking was so high. Like I said unless he gets drastically better.
V and R Miller need to stay with Chest. Chest needs to improve offensively and at the ft line. He is also prone to stupid mistakes like trying to bring the ball up last night and turning it over.
After that and keep Collins the roster needs to be overhauled massively. If Reed rehabs then great other than that the roster needs talent.
Top to bottom talent, shite just 9 players is enough. No reason absolutely no reason to go into yr 4 with a roster like we had this yr. Inexcusable, the recruiting class better hit as well. Bc R Miller and Givins have unachieved. Mike Williams can go as well at least T Miller has improved thru the yr

I guess you guys would have kicked Skylar Mays to the curb after his freshman year too. Givens has great handle and passing skills for a 6'3" guard. The coaching staff feel like his outside shooting will improve, and if he can add some muscle in the pffseason it will do wonders.
Williams has a nice 3 point shot and also plays with intensity on defense. But you would dump him too? Yikes.
Our problems this year are largely because of the 5th year senior transfers being inconsistent and Reed's injury. I think that all 4 freshmen will continue to grow and get better. Robert Miller was showing some nice play the last couple games.
If we truly are boosting NIL we hopefully get a nice SF and veteran PG to round out the team. Maybe a solid PF /C to add depth up front.

I do think you are being a bit too critical of true freshman playing in the best conference in America.
