Why? So we can say this of our defense:

Steele was a patch up hire because we weren't gonna get a big time DC to sign on when he's not sure if his head man will be around in 2 years.

Likely the case if reports are true that the big donors are split on how they feel about Miles.

As much as I appreciate Miles' accomplishments, LSU has forced themselves to go another direction now. Chavis saw the writing on the wall and now it's become evident that Miles could be gone soon.

one more year with Steele will mean the end of Miles. The D just wasnt good this year and unless they reverse the trend of Jrs leaving early, it'll be even worse next year. And we know the offense cant carry this team...

you get it.

throw in the fact that the one good position group, DL, is about to lose its coach, and you have a recipe for disaster.

Young Defense and he hasn't had a chance to bring in guys to fit his system.

it's like some of you guys don't pay attention to depth charts, recruiting and player development.

LSU will be stacked on the DL next year, LB depth will be the only question. We reload in the secondary ever year and even then we will have plenty of guys coming back.

On ? of guys who may go early

White
Beckwith
Neal.

You have three senior starters

Mills
Jones
Louis

New Recruits

currently committed 5 D lineman (3 4 star 2 3 star)
2 4 star OLB
2 5 star Secondary (1 S 1 CB)
1 4 star CB

We are expecting to get Lawrence a 5 star DT, who will probably be a difference maker week 1.

Think about our line next year

We possibly lose neal, and we get 6+ freshman on the line. We have Godchaux, Lacouture, Key, Bower (don't think he would go pro) Gilmore, all returning, all of which got above 10 tackles this year. The simple fact is we are going to be STACKED on the D-line. We all know that games are won and lost on the line of scrimmage. LSU D will easily get better next year, the only qustion is how much does our young LB group hurt us.

Returning 5 starters wouldn't be great but it would be better than years past. The class we are bringing in should be pretty good.

LSU wasn't horrible on D this year, 25th overall in total defense, that is far from great but you act like we couldn't stop anyone. We have a young defense with not alot of depth. AS I said many times this year, our problem isn't scheme it is depth. Our D had no energy at the end of the year.

I still think these hires were made because of the lack of recruiting of dline and linebacker. If they can get the talent up, steele has shown he can have solid defense. And I dont know how high Steele was up the list, but the AD may have tied Les' hands with this contract bs. Orgeron was already living in Mandeville, that wasnt a hard sell.

Either way, looks like LSU didnt make the worst DC hire in the conference. Id give that to Auburn. Their d stunk and hes bolting. What a shite show over there.

Also the d suffered a lot of injuries this year through out the season. Mills only played in 6 of the games, bower missed 3, CL missed 1, Deondre Clark missed 8, Sione Teuhema missed 4, Dwayne Thomas missed 2, Quentin Thomas missed 8, Cory Thompson missed 3, Isaiah Washington missed 6, T White missed 1.

Then you have bain, valentine, lmfao, rashard robinson all gone that should be on this team. No telling on the first 3, but depth would still be nice.

The d wasnt up to par, but in no way can I sit here and blame steele with what he has to work with. Which was 2 linebackers worth anything, a depleted dline, and a mixture of injured veterans and inexperienced players in the secondary.

Why didn't Peveto and Mallory get to bring in their guys? Why didn't Chavis need that type of grace period? That's a fool's errand.

Chavis is a good coordinator, anyone saying hes not is a moron. The issue is LSU was finishing second for top recruits not in the secondary. Look at tamu, d improved, but still not good enough. They arent on the same level of talent on that side of the ball as LSU was in 09 when chavis came in. An to be honest, they may never be as good as some of his ds here.

In 08, Chavis wasnt available. Les prob didnt want to change the d up too much, and it would have been good enough with RP playing qb. But oh shite, one of the most respected dcs in the sec just got shite canned. Any coach but maybe saban would have been a fool to not snatch him up.

I have no idea what is going to happen, but only 3 left last season. And yeah the team was young, or the recruiting from the previous guys started going down. Most of the mass exodus came from that 09 class anyway, you know the guys being recruited when mallory and peveto were the co dcs.

very interesting.

It should be. More than getting rid of Cam I want to get rid of Steele! Need a young upcoming DC guru!

Instead of comparing LSU defense against itself, how about the team that the Great Chief went to?

2015

LSU 3,767 yards given up 24 points a game
A&M 4,406 yards given up 21.6 points a game

Yes A&M played one more game than LSU. Think we would have given up 639 yards to McNeese? They beat us on scoring by a little which is probably a result of kick runbacks more than defense. I would say all in all Steele did about as good a job as Chief would have done.

And no I don't think our players are a lot better than A&M's.

This year the team had 6 defensive tackles on the roster. Two of them are seniors another will likely be gone.

Next year absent JC recruiting there will be three DTs with college experience. Worse, there may be only four even passable LBs on the roster above the true-freshman level.

Steele is not responsible for that.

Why would Miles hire a guy whose philosophy doesn't mix with his personnel?
Because Miles has a core misunderstanding about how pieces fit together. He is a terrible CEO. Les has failed to bring a qb that fits the system that he wants, he brings in coaches with differing philosophy than current roster. Les is not a smart man.

The jury found Steele guilty. Looks like they sentenced him to 3 years in the Auburn correctional facility. Tis a great day, gents. Time to restore a proud defensive tradition to Baton Rouge.
