Player problem. If you don't know by the time you get to college to try to get a double play, then its not the coaches fault. He isn't making the plays on the field. Why blame the coaches? Never have figured that out. Put the blame where it should be, on the players.

program is ok- coaches are ok- this is the same staff that won the cws two years ago - what is hurting is we did not get two pitches on the campus last year- one would have been great - and three pitches from last years staff- have either left-matuslis(spell) & he is hurt and the two hurt pitches - rittner & bourgeois
we lose only three players from this years team - think nola will come back

Crowton got us crystal in 07 yet nearly everyone wanted him out of town the past 2 seasons.

LSU baseball is a victim the program's storied history. Year in, year out, the recruiting class is top notch, and the key players end up getting drafted high, months after they have committed to play for LSU, and end up leaving for the money.
There is no clear answer to the current situation, and how things will change. You simply can't take 5 players out of each year's recruiting class and keep pace. The goal for a college baseball player is to play major league baseball, period. If the opportunity comes along sooner than expected, then the kid is gone.
That said, we should still be able to play .600 ball with the 4 star players that were not drafted in the early rounds.

I wouldn't go that far. Even a school like LSU has to sign multiple players every year who know good and well they probably aren't going to ever play in the Majors.

True but other big time schools recruit these type of players too. What are they doing differently than we are?

Not necessarily. Only a few schools like Texas, SCAL, & Miami really have to deal with this problem on roughly the same scale that LSU does.
It's a very delicate situation to try to handle, and I think to some extent a new recruiter at one of these places just has to learn by experience of trial and error which recruits will take off and which ones will enroll. It's a tough learning curve.

I am going to guess that even losing MLB type talent before they ever get on campus, LSU still out recruits 90% of the schools in the country.
Posted on 4/23/11 at 6:14 pm to RogerTheShrubber
Yeah, but even this crappy team is probably still better than 90% of D1 teams.

Even if only a few schools do deal with that problem, they don't have severe drop offs like this. There is no excuse for what is going on. The difference between Vanderbilt's players and ours is drastic.

I don't know about that. Texas didn't even have a 40-win season in 2008, and SCAL hasn't done much lately.
Miami & FSU probably have the most remarkably consistent programs in college baseball, but being a Florida team is almost unfair in that regard, and FSU's ancient arse coach has never won a NC.

Yep. It's really not even worth discussing, yet it's the focal topic of the thread.

I don't think Texas has finished anywhere near the bottom of the conference since Augie's first or second year there. Heck this team winning 35 games would seem remarkable right now. I just don't think there is any reason for an LSU team to be playing this poorly.

The physical talent may not be what it has been in the past, but they have talent and a lot of it. What they're missing is mental toughness, which is what separates good players and great players.
This team needs to believe in themselves again. They need a psychologist more than a new coach.

There is some truth to that. From what I heard and gather is the locker room is not a cohesive unit. Its eerily similar to the Malleveto disaster and what was going on in the football players locker room.
Making a clean sweep of the assistant coaches would do wonders for the program

The difference between Vandy and LSU players is night and day. Vandy gets three or four hits in a row ,they play solid defense and of course the pitching is stellar. PM needs power hitting first ,third and left fielders, some left hand hitters and left hand pitching. I know PM has a solid left hand pitcher coming in next year but PM needs all of these other parts if the Tigers are to be back in the hunt for the SEC and CWS. This season is very painful to watch, the starting pitching keeps us in the game but wears down and our bullpen sucks, we lose leads and you know that our weak hitting can't put runs on the board. Very frustrating!

Starting lineups from Friday fwiw. LSU had 5 FY players compared to VU's 2, but the biggest problem is simply that players like Dozar, Watkins, and Hanover are not up to the task of playing at positions that are supposed to be producing offense at the plate.
I still like this Vandy team to win a NC by the way, or at least have a better shot at it than any other team.
