re: Is optimism for 2013 football = delusional homerism?

I haven't read through the comments, but here is my take.
Every year the team loses players that everyone can't fathom how the team will be competitive without them.
Each year someone steps up and the team does fine. Sure there may be a drop off at that position, say corner back. Yet a line backer becomes the best player, and the team does fine.
Also, keep in mind that every team in the country lost key players as well.
Sure the Tigers are rebuilding their defensive line, but most of the new players have seen significant action thus far.
The sky is not falling.

So is the optimism warranted or are we being a bunch of homers by expecting a good season?
Cautious optimism is always warranted when you have a program that has a continuous inflow of exceptional talent and top level coaches.
This is college football, don't get too hung up on the player losses, particularly considering the players still on the team that got game time exposure last year. I also think a hard game to start the season is the perfect scenario to break in new starters.
Cautiously optimistic.

I think we lose an extra game without Hill on the team. 10-2 is a great season, and I think that's the kind of talent we have.

is hill definitely gone? haven't heard a definite answer on this yet.

Silicon, I am with u. There are alot of things to like or dislike about this years Tigers. Every time I get optimisic or pessimistic something seems to pop up and has me leaning the other way.
I took a look at the Vegas Line expecting 10-1 or so and its 18-1!
So maybe my optimism is just plain homerism. I do believe if we stay healthy(Mett and Barrow especially)and if the Freak can demand double teams, we will win 10+ games.
We may can count this yr a success or not by how well we do with the instate recruiting after the season ends.

This seems to be one of the toughest seasons in recent memory to gauge accurately. More talent but less experience. High ceiling but low floor. 9-3 is probably more likely than 11-1. But either are completely possible.
Being Optimistic /= being delusional. And this is LSU so there is always cause for optimism.
If the offense can take a step forward and be CONSISTENT for once along with the efficiency we've seen at times then the defense can afford to take the likely step back. Sure, the schedule is pretty difficult but every single game is winnable.
The intagibles like team morale and "fire" will go a long way to determining the season.
If a true team leader steps up this could be a special season, but, as it stands, I'd go with others in saying that 9-3 or 10-2 is probably a reasonable expectation at this point.
If they go out and rock TCU like they did Oregon in '11.. then look out. We may be in for a treat.

Anyone who says the 2011 schedule was more difficult than the 2013 is ignorant. We played fl,tn,and ky from the east, or and wv ooc. Fl and wv were shite that year. This year we play tcu and add a&m for an easter division foe, add a legit ga and fl this year and this may be the most difficult schedule in my 39 year life.

Given where the program is now IMO 10 wins less the bowl game every year is a reasonable expectation.

The Rant is spectacularly efficient this year. The season has yet to even begin and certain posters have already compiled a list of excuses for our anticipated losses. Nice.

We all lost alot. This is not and should never be an excuse. We recruit better than anyone save Bama. Anyone reading Tigerdroppings should know this.

The real son of a bitch is gonna be if we beat Bama and lose to UGA and UF and get to watch Bama go the the SEC CC.
We can beat this horse all we want, it aint gonna change anything. I will say this: If LSU gets to double digit wins in the regular season, all you Miles haters better profusely apologize. LSU winning the NC this season, barring epic collapses by other teams on the schedule, would arguably be the greatest season in college football history.

Even if we go undefeated this year and win the NCG (which is possible because every game is winnable), I still dont see how 2011 could ever be topped. Avg margin of victory was 22 pts and we beat 9 ranked teams. That may never be done again.

There are 4 games...
Beating Georgia on road, which considering all they lost (they lost more talent than we did) is def possible.
A&M at home should be a win. There's no other way to say it. They probably only have 4-5 players that would start at LSU.
Florida at home in revenge game from last year will be a good game. Def winnable as well because even though Mett shite the bed in that game last year, Id still take him over Driskel, or whoever will start for them this year. (hopefully either this game or A&M is a night game, preferably both)
Bama is Bama. Flip a coin.

Are you kidding me?
Arkansas was ranked #3 when we played them
Oregon was ranked #3 when we played them
Bama was ranked #2 when we played them
#17 Florida, #16 W. Virginia, #25 Miss. st, #20 Auburn RANKED.
Then we faced #16 UGA and #2 Bama. Eight ranked teams (actually 9, but we played Bama twice)
WVU went and won the Orange Bowl, Oregon went and won the Rose Bowl. We play Kent st, Furman, and UAB this year. That alone makes our schedule worse.
Replace Arky with UGA, Oregon with A&M, and WVU with TCU. UF stays UF, Bama stays Bama but Oh look!!! That's fricking it!
We don't have a 20 ranked Auburn on our sched (not even close)
We don't have a 25 ranked MSU on our sched (not even close)
So tell me again how this schedule is so much harder?

breakdown of the defense in the last 4 games should be cause for concern
I think this has been pretty overstated. I would mostly attribute that to losing the Bama game and for all intents and purposes getting removed from title contention. It's not like they lost those 4 games either, still finished 10-2.

What the heck. It's much easier to replace defensive talent if you are talented.. just as LSU is. Those 2 star defensive ends.. a lot of people were saying underperformed.. and Reid wasn't his old self any ways.. Big loss was the MLB, but again lots of young speedier talent there any was.
The entire offense for the most part is back with a Senior QB entering into his zone. This is huge. Every team in the conference loses key players every year.. LSU is as loaded and coached as well as anyone and should expect a big season. Especially with the new weapons added to the offense.
UGA and Bama on the road are the only 2 games I am concerned about. A&M will not come to LSU and win. The couldn't even beat LSU at home with their best team.
