yeah, we had a shitty year in 2011, but we overacheived this season.

Who fault is it that we were in a position to overachieve? PM recruits the players, the buck stops with him.

We've gone 3 years with no trips to Omaha...if we make it 4 next year it will be completely unacceptable for the amount of resources we put into the program.

I say if we miss the regionals, then yes. Smoke only did this once and he was fired. I think by missing twice it would be time for PM to go. I know he won a natty, but that would be going downhill, especially if we have the same issues we had this year with hitting, base running, bunting, etc.

Yeah, the record was good, but you could see the major downfall of the team.

Exactly. However Miles got rid of him. Mainieri not only keeps him around but goes on record as saying a pitching coach is "overrated". As far as Stony brook is concerned baseball happens we hit a bad slump and we had already overachieved to get there. That doesnt bother me. What bothers me is Mainieri's attitude afterwards.

This. As long as we're drawing 10,000/game, no one is going anywhere. When Tiger Nation starts to vote with their feet, then you might see some action.

That's really a moot point considering we've lead the nation in paid attendance for 17 straight years. Yet, we fired Smoke during that time period. LSU only cares about paid attendance not actual attendance.

Regardless of the season's results, LSU will always sell out baseball season tickets. Not really sure how relevant "vot[ing] with their feet" is as you suggest.

You're completely wrong, if there's no butts in the ballpark, concessions aren't being sold. LSU makes a ton more on concessions than they do tickets.

2009 National Coach of the Year (ABCA, Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, Rivals.com)
2009 Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year
2008 National Coach of the Year (Rivals.com, CollegeBaseballInsider.com)

Career Record (29 seasons): 1075-596-7 (.643)
LSU Record (five seasons): 211-104-2 (.669)

LSU Baseball under Paul Mainieri

NCAA National Champions - 2009
College World Series Appearances - 2008, 2009
Southeastern Conference Champions - 2009, 2012
SEC Tournament Champions - 2008, 2009, 2010
SEC Western Division Champions - 2008, 2009, 2012

Yea I guess this isn't good enough. I realize we have not been to Omaha since 2009 but damn people give him a break. He has had big shoes to fill and I think he has done a great job so far.

Just curious, but what is his record against sec opponents since he's been here?

Should've ended your comment right there.

Filling Smoke's shoes was a big task? I was unaware of that.

96-82-2 (.533)

2007 12–17–1 5th (West)
2008 18–11–1 2nd (West)
2009 20–10 1st (West)
2010 14–16 5th (West)
2011 13–17 T–5th (West)
2012 19–11 1st (West)

That point is: how long does he get to live off his National Championship in 2009? If after 4 years, he hasn't made Omaha, I'd say that it's a legitimate question whether or not his job is safe.

No but if he misses Omaha again I expect he will be forced to make some changes (ie. Sanchez gets the hook).

A ton more on concessions than tickets? What are you talking about?

Per LSU's 2011 Athletic Department audit:
quote:

OTHER SPORTS
Ticket Sales $2,816,207
Contributions $5,148,749
...
Concessions $200,543

LINK

Considering the audit categorizes Football, Basketball, and Women's Basketball as separate categories, you can assume "OTHER SPORTS" is basically baseball. Thus, you've got roughly $3 million in ticket sales to $200,000 in concessions.

What were you saying, again?

I'll hang up and listen
He should be. Needs to recruit hitters. Nest year 2 hitters, Rymes & Katz. Same result except Gausman will be gone and no replacement for him except Nola. Nola is great but gets hit whn the ump woesn't give the low strike or the corners. I'm hoping for the best but expecting less.

First off, you are proving my point and discrediting your own because those are paid attendance, not actual attendance, figures.

Second, even assuming your point (that people vote with their feet and a decline would justify a move) is valid, let me ask you one simple question based on those numbers. If those numbers are relevant, then why did we only average 36 people more at games in 2000, when we won a National Championship, than in 2006, when Laval was fired?

So we are already writing off Ross, Jacoby and Tyler Moore next year? Also Alex Bregman?

Pitching wise, you could have an improved Eades and Nola, will have Cotton back, Bourgeios plus newcomers

They need to improve at the plate with RISP. Their approach seems rushed and they don't take on good pitches, regardless of the count. When they're patient they won't swing the bat.

Pitching is the least of my concern.

Hitting in the clutch has little to do with coaching.....and I'd like to see some stats to back up our trouble with RISP
