Nah, not every problem. The infield defense regressed this year with the same players.

The infield D did regress and two of the four fielding positions were manned by different players. Catching really fell and they were not the same.

So no, it wasn’t the same infield D as what we had last year.

What also hurt was our pitching staff’s D. It was bad and I think JJ should be questioned here. Were our pitchers doing enough defensive drills?

Doughty played a great 3B from about G15 thru the end of last season. So instead of leaving him there, he was moved to 2B & played terrible.

Thompson regressed at SS. Johnson talked him up in the offseason as a potential future MLB’er. He clearly has the tools (as does Doughty) but they both got worse & that speaks to a lack of defensive focus.

He put him at second because we had no options there that could hit. He played second as a freshman under PM and didn’t do well then but his % improved from 2020 second base to 2022 second base.
If Doughty had played third where would Berry play? He couldn’t cut in in RF. At DH he would cut out Pearson or Jobert.
But it was obvious, JJ went with the bats as he should.

He talked the kid up. Maybe he thought Thompson needed confidence? Do you think JJ should have talked bad if the kid? Who else would play there?

And that’s the point, PM didn’t recruit guts that were good fielding and hitting middle infielders.

CPM lost the fan base after the super regional home loss to Florida state…..New coaching has brought new life too the players and the fans….. Our hitting was horrible under CPM it had no heartbeat……

That's fair. Defense has regressed under him but PM teams could never do fundamentals correctly and consistently had mediocre hitting. This isn't the same infield as last year though and a different catcher is an issue. At least this guy has brought offense to the program and life to it.

It's possible those defense issues are not on him. Maybe Thompson isn't as good as we thought when he was recruited? Not enough body of work with JJ yet to know if this is he issue or a player issue.

Anyone have his numbers while at Zona for their defense? Just curious.

He couldn’t cut it at 3B either

Jobert has done better In the OF & Pearson hasn’t DHed at all

All this was self created with the intention of helping Berry’s draft stock. That was a conscious decision made by the coach that directly affected the outcome of games

He doesn’t have to say anything. Of course he wouldn’t talk bad about the kid lol

Thompson has the tools to be a good SS. It should be expected that he improves year to year, not regress. And I’m fairly certain based on history that would have happened under PM.

He must not be very good coaching a defense. Not sure what they're doing there but you need defense to win anything. Not encouraging numbers tbh.
