I'll save the entire thread. The disaster that was JL and JJ are gone. We have a real QB.

Teams will attack our linebackers and stay away from all american safety. You will see teams use the WV game plan this year to get rid of the ball quickly. I think the Washington game is going to be a learning curve game for our defensive backs.

Press coverage unlike the third quarter. Jam and get pressure.

Again, saying we "improved big time" on the DL after losing a top 10 talent like Brockers and another very solid senior starter in Adams is kind of ridiculous. I love all of our talent on the DL, and am anxious to see Freak and Ego get more snaps, but why the need to knock on one of the all time great LSU D's last year, setting unrealistic expectations for this young D at the same time??

You're right, but at the same time I don't think its that much of a stretch to think this line could be better.

Brockers was a huge loss, especially in the run game. But, whoever fills in could be an upgrade on the pass rush.

Scouts loved Brockers' potential, but he wasn't a high production guy in college. 2 career sacks. Ken Adams wasn't super active either.

It's hard to tell, because each year there are surprises. Bennie Logan wasn't on many people's radar before last year.

So the answer being yes if you needed help connecting the dots. And yes, we will have the offensive boost.

I think there will be a slight drop off in defense, but that's only to be expected. Considering we played 7 top 25 teams and barely gave up double digits (11 PPG), it would be hard to expect this year's defense to do better.
Interesting take, but consider the fact that we DON'T face that schedule...the defensive STATS should actually improve. No Oregon, no WVU on this schedule. Instead, Towson, UNT, Idaho. And Ole Miss.

I'm tired of hearing about the WV game. We are not perfect and our secondary can have and off game. We did play 4 other top 20 offenses last year. Georgia southern ran for over 300 yards on bama last year and it didn't stop them from destroying our running game and winning it all.

He DID NOT say that! TM was thrown at because he was our 3rd cb and they wanted no part of MC..Now he is the starter and will be tested.

The third CB has to be the bigger concern.

Exactly what TM7 was, that's why he's an unknown at full time cover corner.

TM was/is great at making plays. He has yet to prove himself as an elite cover corner, so please refrain from overhyping his unproven abilities.

IMO he will be a great corner but might struggle against taller WR's with a great qb....

TM was a full-time starter last year. His role hasn't changed. He starts at outside CB in the base defense and moves to nickel when the other team has more then 3 wrs. The nickel cb position is more difficult then the outside cb. LSU's concern is the third cb. I trust that chief will not put someone out there he doesn't trust. And LSU has recruited well enough in the secondary where there will be a good #3 cb. I don't think this will be a problem.

We also lost Ron Brooks, who was really our 3rd corner. We played so much nickel with Mathieu that Simon was our 2nd corner a lot and then Brooks came in on Dime and a lot of other times too.

And, he was a SR with 4.4 speed.

We will miss Brooks just like we will Brandon Taylor and Claiborne.

I am one who argees with Prom here and I think our secondary will take a step back, at least early on while they get used to working together. We had a lot of blown coverages last year, too. Usually, it was Simon in the wrong position. New guys need experience and they will make mistakes until they get it. It is just a fact.

The new guys are very talented, no doubt. But, with a new DB coach and a loss of a TON of experience back there, we are going to struggle a bit at first. Fortunately, our early schedule is relatively easy, at least compared to last year.

Even losing what we have lost, the defense will either remain the same or be even better based solely on the competition this year.

Think about it, we played some pretty high ranking offenses in WVU, and Oregon. This year other than Wilson and that kid from Washington, we don't really play a quality QB. Also Arky will have to adjust from HC loss and their top 2-3wrs. I think this is a great year to get the young guys adjusted to the game, btw I think we score enough and retain the ball long enough to keep them off the field a lot more this year.

i didnt read the whole thread but i'd like to think it's going to be hard for qb's to throw from their backs or from the locker room for that matter. i think that the db's will be able to press a lot because of the pressure from the d-line.

. With Mathieu moving full time to the CB position, does the defense give up more yards in the air this year?

Yes. Because of Mathieu's diminutive size, he won't be able to consistently smother larger receivers on the outside of the field. Mathieu's forte is as a disruptor, not as an every down cover corner. The only way that the secondary can match its performance of a year ago is if Simon elevates his play to an All-American level (a la Claiborne in 2011) and one of the young unheralded players becomes a force at CB, thereby allowing TM to return to his traditional role when the team is in nickel.

The loss of Jenkins was not helpful.
