Is a boost in offense a necessity to overcome a lack in the secondary?

Bear with me because I know alot of you are going to flip the frick out and post "DBU MFer!!" I just want to throw out a possible scenario and add a little perspective here.

By lack, I mean lack of experience @ CB and quite the amount of young players that will be on the field.

Last year, you have Claiborne and Simon and Mathieu platooning at the nickel. That's 3 quality DB's on the field at any given time. With Mathieu moving full time to the CB position, does the defense give up more yards in the air this year? Do you expect to see a dropoff in pass defense this year and how does that indirectly effect what the offense has to do this year? Who was it in the Spring Game that got burnt a couple of times?

CB depth

Matheiu
Simon
RSFresh.
RSFresh. @ Nickel and Dime
New DB coach

The defense gave the offense alot to work with last year. Will the offense have to do more work than it did last year due to the possible decline in pass defense?

Thoughts? (can't wait for the backlash)

ETA: I think LSU has one of the best group of safeties in the country. So the main focus here is the CB position.

I think there will be a slight dropoff, but not enough of one to cause us to lose games

Well, I'm trying to balance myself out. I'm terribly negative on the rb, so I guess I have to be here too, right?

I'm trying to change my e-image.

yes we will need a boost, our defense scored a good amount of points for us last year so our points per game was inflated....that being said we should be able to even out our lack of experience at db with better lb play and putting more pressure on the qb

yes. we are going to miss mo and brockers also. by yrs end, we should be ok. bama's ability to thread the needle, a la nc game, scares me.

I expect some drop off. I think it will take sometime for the LBs and new corners to learn their positions. I don't expect the defense to be as good as last year, but I do think they will be a top 10 defense. Which if Mett is what we think he is will be all we need.

I think out pass rush will negate some of that in every game except Alabama.

Not me Bama had a perfect game in the NC game, not to worry. We will be fine what a lot of people forget, the gumps lost a lot more on DF than they are letting on.

THIS

I see martin and eugene being on the field when we in nickle or need 5 db's if matheiu is on the outside. They have 2 much talent 2 keep off the field and they can cover and tackle. I feel sorry for loston i really do.

I think a real problem arises if either TM or Simon go down injury. We cannot replace TMs abilities to change games, period. He changed the Ark and UGA games with punt returns and also made plays via the turnover playing Ark at safety. Also, if Simon goes down, that will put TM or Collins on a #1 WR. As stacked as we are at DB, we arent as deep as last year, espescailly at corner.

our DBs as a whole are not as good as last year, but our stats could be similar depending on how efficient the passing attacks are we play this year. Not giving up 500 yrds to a team (WVU) like last year will be a start.

I think the offense is capable of picking up any slack left by our DBs. Mett is gonna Mett and our WRs are gonna surprise. Landry and Wright are itching to break out and RS is a nice #4 Wr.

Mo Claiborne went from 2nd team All-SEC to the 6th pick in the draft from 2010 to 2011.

Eric Reid & Tyrann Mathieu were All-Americans already last year. There is nothing that leads me to suspect that they didn't improve and weren't capable of improving from last year to this year.

As far as Simon, I love how everyone's downplaying his ability. But factoid for you:

Simon gave up fewer yards per completion than Claiborne did, and that was getting thrown at way more. His technique, speed and wingspan on the edge is NFL-caliber. That's said with a straight face. The question for him is if he improved technique enough in terms of improvement over the offseason to be able to handle defending routes properly that break away from the sideline and into the defense.

LSU ran a good bit of man with only Reid last year over the top. Sometimes Reid wasn't back all that much and it was a "man empty" look. We had the talent to do it. We still have the talent to do it this year. Collins is going to be given the opportunity to play corner this year and the 3rd corner sees the field a TON in this defense.

Mathieu will get called on to play Safety as well as slot-corner just as he did a ton last year. Micah Eugene Collins & Ronnie Martin are going to be way better than folks realize.

The objective evidence in regards to the analysis of this Secondary is that it has the chance to be demonstrably better than last year though the depth may not be as experienced. The early part of the schedule gives us the luxury of getting lots of player's feet wet there.

So in my opinion, we're going to be better. Considering the infusion of talent at LB & the improvement of the Defensive Line-and make no mistake it improved bigtime-we are going to be a better defense this year compared to last. Especially taking Oregon & West Virginia off our schedule.

Book it bro. The Secondary & the Defense are going to be way, way better. With our without the offense coming along.

Deal with it, 'Merica.

I think we'll be fine, but it's an interesting point. Some people would not admit we needed better offense/QB play because of our W/L record. If there is a drop off, I think Mett will more than make up for it.

A lot of people will just see the same top-flight play.

Just amazing to me that people don't realize how much better a player like Eric Reid can become. He was a 1st year starter coached by a position coach in Cooper who didn't stress footwork, fundamentals and technique anywhere near as much as his current position coach is.

A superior athlete returning with experience who now has superior fundamentals? Yeah, he's a shoo-in to improve.

Same with TM7.

The question this year is if the Secondary can stay healthy. We are thinner at CB & S compared to last year. If Loston can't stay healthy, that takes away some versatility with Martin & Eugene covering that spot and the backup for Reid.

Same situation at Corner.

The difference in 2010 was that we brought in young, extremely talented players like Simon & Reid off the bench who were ready to perform in clutch situations like the Bama game. In 2011, we stayed almost completely healthy.

To borrow a Les Miles quote, the health of the Secondary, "is an interesting piece," to watch this year.

That's actually my main concern here.

Eugene is a RSFr. with no experience on a college football field. I understand that he's named "starter" for a reason, but there's a learning curve in everything we do.

Same goes for Collins. We saw the back of Collins jersey a couple of times in the spring game.

I'm not really focusing on Reid, Mathieu, Simon, Loston, or Martin. It's the depth once LSU has to move past those guys at times this year.

I think another factor is how much pressure our Dline and LBs are able to put on the other teams' QBs. I think we have potential this year to get more pressure than last, which is no small feat. If we do, I don't think there will be much dropoff with this years CBs.
