You can give him a pass for year 1- making the sec title game alone is a successful year

Year 2- offense was 2019 levels great, defense was arguably the worst in LSU history. The secondary was amoung least talented backends in LSU history. You can argue some of this was on Kelly as his portal moves in the secondary(Denver Harris, duce chestnut, jk Johnson ) were all busts outside of maybe Andre sam. Matt house and steeples clearly had to go at DC and cb coach

Year 3: defense improved but was still clearly talent deficient at certain position groups, Chris Hilton being hurt eliminated our deep passing game, run blocking was simply not good enough esp at the guard spots.

Heading into year 4, however, not only is there not glaring holes but there is a ton of talent and depth at every single position. This is not only the most talented team BK has had at LSU but probably in his whole entire coaching career. Rosters like this is why he left notre dame for LSU. If Kelly does not deliver a playoff birth this year his seat is flat out hot heading into year 5

The SEC also doesn’t have a team that’s unbeatable. Texas, UGA and BAMA are as even with us in last 10 years.

I tend to agree. The playoffs is the floor.

He himself told us Year 3, why do we keep moving the goal posts? Injuries will always happen. If Nuss were to go down Week 1, would you give him a pass on Y4 and postpone to Y5?

I don't think he had an excuse last year.

But yeah he has no excuse at all this year. Not finishing top 12 while being paid 100 million dollars and having an open check book for NIL is criminal.

It's time for him to produce. If he wasn't so arrogant when he came in and retained Corey Raymond we probably win the national title in 23.

He needs to win the opener and he needs to make the playoffs

Yes, he is loaded this year on offense and defense. Depth and experience with some really good players coming in. He needs 10 wins and playoff birth this year or I say his seat heats up for sure. Biggest questions are the OL and the DL. I think the DL will be much better. But, if the OL turns out to be a problem with pass protection and not able to run the ball then LSU could be in the8-4 or 9-3 situation. It does not get easier with the 1st game @Clemson. If he starts again at 0-1, then negative comments will crank up on CBK.

It’s put up or shut up time and I’ve been a BK defender. He’s arguably one of the best 5 head coaches in college football with all the skins on the wall except for a natty. Time to take that last step.

Matt House is an obvious excuse.
Sure it’s his hire, but still a valid excuse.

This year he has the QB, the roster, the staff, everything.

Hell I'm over here just wanting to start the season 1-0. Kelly needs to get this season opener monkey off his back.

The excuse was not having the NIL funds to properly put together a really good complete team the past couple seasons, this year thats long gone.

Matt House is absolutely not an excuse in terms of he literally hired him and we paid House like a top DC ($1.8M in 2022 and $1.9M in 2023). I dont consider that an excuse at all, just a bad hire by Kelly. That was 100% in his control. NIL wasnt really in his control by comparison (and really isnt in the hands of any HC for the most part, but now Kelly can benefit from having a real competitive budget there).

They’re not.

If you want a better excuse than Matt House, our starters at DB in 2023 included Sage Ryan, Ashton Stamps, Denver Harris, Duce Chestnut, Major Burns, Javen Toviano, Andre Sam.

Would you also like to talk about our DL that year?

If I recall, he said he expected to be competing for a NC by year three. He's going into year four, makes a ton of $$ just like his staff, in the second poorest state in the country. If he's not in the expanded playoff this year, it's going to get hot. His buy out Jan 1 2026 is 55M.

If we lose the opener at Clemson, LSU fans will (rightfully) be absolutely livid. He's earned this potential spot by losing the opener the past few years.
We are expected to not only make it to the playoffs, but compete for the big 'un. Anything less will get the pitchforks out.
Not unrealistic at all. He and the CFB landscape now have led to this.
I have a feeling if he doesn't make it this year, he will probably retire.

I see that you got all of that covered now. Not to mention the other medical issues with defense that year - medical emergency with DL coach before the season & no replacement. Greg Brooks brain tumor after 2 games
