Berry's draft stock was not reliant on defense at all.

Maybe if he’d have started and stayed at DH all season. But after that circus in the OF (didn’t his projection drop to the 20s at some point in the season?), I think he had to show he could play somewhere and not trip all over himself like he was finally able to do at 3rd.

Not sure where you’re getting those numbers, but I’ll concede them.

It’s a trickle down affect. Berry was terrible in the OF, the team labored through 13 starts of that. Misplays all over the place, giving up extra bases & runs that may never be scored in the book as errors.

When he wasn’t at 3B, Merrfield made 7 errors. He was not good in the field at all.

When Berry was at 3B, he hardly made any plays not hit to him.

All of this forced Doughty to 2B, where he made 14 errors & never looked comfortable.

So you have flat out errors, and plays that aren’t made that should have been. And that’s what you get.

Doughty’s stability at 3rd & Berry not in the field would have lent for more stability, however you chose to work around that.

Maybe you sacrificed that to have a great offense, but that doesn’t mean it was right or that it didn’t happen,

But not having Berry in the field could have improved the defense by 20-25% between runs saved & errors, In my opinion.

Is that backed up at all in the games Berry missed?

I mean He was out for the Ole Miss Series and we had 3 errors had 4 errors and gave up 24 runs in that series. And we gave up 18 runs and had 3 errors in the SECT. In the 2 games vs Alabama we missed we gave up 11 runs and had 3 errors. That’s 10 errors in 8 games he missed.

We had a few good clean games
But we also had absolutely terrible games.

Not to mention Berry had no effect on Thompson and the pitchers combining for 16 errors

Again, it’s not like Doughty was at 3rd when Berry was in the OF. Doughty even played SS for a bit. I think Johnson saw him as our second best infielder.

And the numbers sorta support that. Thompson/Merrifield/Cranford we’re pretty bad and 2/3 couldn’t hit.

I don’t think we go in with 2 left handed hitters every game Skenes pitches.

If he's not the best, then he's close to it. He was mentioned by multiple announcers as being one of the best at first base. I'd love to know how many games he saved from certain disaster this past year with all of the pathetic routine throws hurled his way.

I wasn't expecting to see this thread still going. I guess we are all having baseball withdrawal. Anyone want to take a shot at our closers?

I'm going Taylor as the main closer. Jay mentioned him and Fontenot as potential closers in year two. He's had a great summer and even put himself as a possible starter. I would like to see Noot and Shores backing him up. They have big arms and I would like to see them crank it full force for an inning.

Let me expand on that a little more. I see Floyd, Skenes and Hurd as our starters. Little will take that Reyzelman role of coming in the 7th and shutting a team down. Moffett, Ackenhausen and Bucknam are long relief pitchers. Then Taylor, Noot and Shores as closers.

Jay said he wants to look at Guidry as a closer. If true, I think he'll also want to look at Noot, Moffet, and Shores there. Veteran guys that will first get a look to start but may fill a closer role would be Floyd, Taylor, and Money. Way too early to know.

I forgot about Guidry closing and Floyd would be interesting.
