you can't call a 4th round NFL draft pick a bust. Al Woods just isn't a correct answer.

Chris Davenport is working pretty hard at it, but I still have hope that he can contribute at OG down the line. We will see. I think Xavier Carter is probably a pretty good answer being that the thing most of us remember him by is kneeling at the 1 yard line against UGA.

Still, to me it is never fair to call a guy who sticks around the program for 5 years, competes and lends depth, a bust. When I think of bust I think of someone who just never contributed to the team in a positive way and ended up washing out early.

I can't believe it took 5 pages to get the correct answer.

I'm not sure if he was 5-star (I'm too lazy to google it or the correct spelling of his name), but I would say Phelon Jones was a bigger bust than Jai.

Edit: Phelon was 4-star and transferred to another school that can't even win their own division or conference. I would call a 4-star that only starts 2 games a bust.

Loston is not a bust because Reid is a stud.

anyone that says Shep or even Loston have not followed LSU football more than the last 4 years. Those are ridiculous answers

Well said. They shouldn't even be in the conversation.

Robert Davis in 1992 from Curley's "All Mr Southern State" class from Birmingham. Could hit the whole like he was shot out of a cannon but linemen could tackle him from behind 20 yards down field.

by a mile. dude's done nothing. at least Shep and Loston have made starts and contributions. hopefully Davenport at least becomes a rotation player, but it doesn't look like it.

Pretty sure what you described is exactly what causes you to be labeled a bust. If you can't get on the field because someone is better than you or outplaying you, you are a bust. Maybe I'm just crazy though.
I wouldn't say crazy, but I would disagree slightly.

To me, being a bust means not being nearly as good as the expectations. If you happen to be a 5* QB in the same recruiting class as Peyton Manning or Tim Tebow and never get meaningful playing time because they play ahead of you for four years, you might not be a bust because you could very well be the second best QB in the country. If you happen to be a 5* QB in the same recruiting class as Seth Adams and you never see significant playing time because he plays ahead of you for four years, then you are very likely a bust.

Al Woods was NOT a bust. He def under achieved, but wasnt a bust. He contributed while he was here. Plus, he played behind some pretty damn good DTs. And hes actually gotten some PT in the NFL. Not a bust.

Davenport is a bust. But i dont really think its his fault. Came from a tiny 1A school in Mansfield where he dominated everyone because he was 3x bigger than anyone else on the field. Scout/Rivals saw a monster 17 year old dominate everyone for 3 years, so they blew his name up. Still, he is a bust.

Yeah, sometimes it makes me laugh how freely people on this board throw around the term, "bust". According to some of these crackpots, every recruit in history must have been a "bust" except maybe Tim Tebow and Hershel Walker. Maybe.

Completely unfair to say that any player still active is one of the biggest busts in LSU history. Say Shep has a blowout year in 2012. As a whole his career wouldn't have lived up to the 5* status, but it would take him out of the biggest bust conversation.

I'm ok with our running backs being tackled 20 yards down the field. I'll take burst through the hole over breakaway speed any day.

See, that's the part I don't get. If he has an All-American year as a receiver and return man, makes a bunch of game-changing or game-winning plays, and leads this team to a National Championship, how would a career like his (with that season added to his current accomplishments) not live up to 5* expectations?

What are legitimately reasonable expectations for a 5* recruit? Are they all expected to be Patrick Peterson/Julio Jones/Adrian Petersen caliber superstars? Or did guys like that actually exceed reasonable expectations even for a 5*? I mean, very VERY few 5* (or anyone else, for that matter) actually turn out to be stars of that caliber, with consistently huge playmaking ability demonstrated from day one and sustained throughout a three or four year career. So is it really reasonable to expect that of any given 5*?

Imo, even one All-American worthy season with consistent big plays that change or even win games is at least as much as I reasonably expect from any given 5*. I understand that some are going to exceed that, but it doesn't make sense to me to expect every one of them to be in that top 5%/top 10%; most of them are going to be in the bottom 90%.
