It would be two bad hires in a row in our second biggest money producIng sport and the one with the most potential improvement.

Also, this hire is so blatantly risky, that he's really asking the fan base to trust him on this one.

The political machine out there is what really needs to GTFO if things don't work out.

No. By all accounts he tried to get a big time coach and nobody bit.

The way the AAU system runs recruiting, your head coach needs to be in with those guys. The people running the AAU system in Louisiana made it clear they wanted JJ. That alone makes it a better hire than someone with an equal resume and no connections. It's not like football where a good recruiter is a good recruiter regardless of what part of the country he is in. TJ couldn't win here because he wouldn't play the game with CT and friends. That part of the problem has now been remedied.

I think it's the first bad move Alleva has made as athletic director. I don't know if Alleva gets ousted if it doesn't work out, but it's definitely a black eye on Alleva if it doesn't work out in the eyes of the fans.

Alleva receives a lot of criticism (much like any politician in power), but most of it up to this point has been undeserved. this is really the first move he's made that has the potential to really blow up in his face.

can you list out all of his good moves? You can include his time at Duke too if you like.

To be fair, Alleva hasn't really had the opportunity to make any "good moves" that will define his legacy as LSU AD. Nonetheless, good things he's done:

-LSU athletic department is more financially stable and profitable than ever
-Kept Miles (if you assume there really was Michigan-Miles interest)
-Hired Trent (this was a good/bold hire on paper, it just didn't work out)
-Hired Caldwell from UCLA
-Made it a priority to restore Tiger Stadium
-Has made it a priority to keep LSU athletics clean (put a lot of emphasis on compliance)
-worked well with Miles to difuse the Shady-gate situation...that had the potential to really blow up, and for the most part it did not
-has really worked well with the powers that be with the NCAA...we are not looked at as a problem-child program

I don't really care what he did or did not do at Duke...I'm only concerned with his LSU tenure, and it's been a pretty good one so far despite the fans constantly looking for a reason to attack him solely because he's an LSU "outsider."

All that said, this Jones hire is the first move IMO that really has the potential to damage Alleva.

TJ was a very good hire on paper like 2 days after he became AD.

Kept Miles from going to Michigan

Caldwell is a great hire

Tried to make a great softball hire, didn't work out but not his fault

Giving TS the facelift it needs

Has been a good fundraiser

Yep the dirty politics at LSU came back with a vengeance. This hire proves that Alleva has become a shadow of Joe Dean.

That was going to happen regardless of the AD

For sure, but Alleva has been the face of the campaign...he's made restoring Tiger Stadium a priority, and he made that a priority on Day1.

And to be honest, in the long run, Tiger Stadium is more important to most of us than head coaches. Head coaches come and go, but Tiger Stadium will always be here, so I'm glad we have an AD that is willing to spend some money on making the necessary improvements to make the aesthetics of Tiger Stadium level the atmosphere of Tiger Stadium while maintaining history and tradition.

I certainly hope he is already in trouble with the BOS. This is the one, single sport, where his background and connections should have yielded something better than a middling Sun Belt coach that left our university in disgrace and now is having our money thrown at him to return to their platitudes. touche. It is pretty much the consensus in the SEC that Tiger Stadium is probably one of the most recognizable venues in the SEC, but it also the consensus in the league that the stadium for the most part is a complete shithole. BDS and TS are night and day when it comes to aesthetics.

What's the other part of the "problem", that you hint at, Draco?

I would say he is already a lame duck, since outsiders dictated the hire. He is the athletic director, yet not directing

I'm by no means an Alleva sunshine pumper. Like everyone else, he still hasn't "grown on me" and I still look at him as an LSU outsider. His legacy as LSU AD is definitely still to be determined IMO.

But most of the criticism he gets up to this point has been unfair and basically unwarranted. Albeit small things, most of the things he's been a part of so far have been positive things.

If we're going by strikes, the Jones hire definitely has the potential to be Strike1, though.

I know you are not.

I think that is a fair statement, but honestly I am disappointed to say the least that the best an ex Duke AD could do is hire someone from the Sunbelt with direct ties to some of the cancer that has plagued this program.

I was definitely disappointed by the hire, but after the initial disappointment wore off, I'm beginning to accept it.

Maybe it will work out...Recruiting should get better, we've got an LSU guy as head coach that is probably going to work his arse off to prove himself. He's got a lot of connections that should benefit the program and make a lot of people in position to help the program happy. The hire has its benefits in that regard.

I'll give it a wait and see approach. But, to the point of this thread, if this doesn't work out there's no question in my mind that criticism of Alleva over this hire will be necessary and justified.
