My issue isn't that he may get hurt and won't be able to play offense.
But he's more likely to get hurt actually playing offense.

He will get broken in half returning kicks.
Again, who was the last player to get broken in half returning kicks? This seems to be a myth.

Didnt this happen on Not Another Teen Movie? But i guess the kid was playing WR.

Why are so many people fine with simply having a "capable" returner.
Me either. I also never understood why people feel the same way about QB, just wanting somebody who doesn't try to do too much and to just not turn the ball over and get the ball in the hands of the playmakers. We would not settle for mediocre at any other position on the field, yet we're fine with the guy with the ball in hands on every single offensive play only being average? Perhaps there is someone out there who can actually limit turnovers AND make plays.

I agree with what you said earlier: If they plan on using Shep for 10-15 offensive plays a game, then I don't know that it'd be worth it. But if it's just 4-5, then by all means. I guess it will just all depend on how he's used.

I think Calhoun will be way more than "capable"
Posted on 7/30/09 at 10:15 am to Hot Carl
If it will only be 4-5/game, then i'm all about it. But it seems like, according to Miles, he will be on the field more. That is what my opinion was based off.

I think most all fans want an explosive returner, but if you look at punt returner, for example, the order of things that happen are...
1. make decision to field punt, or let it go (happens on every punt)
2. if catching, make decision to return or fair catch (happens on most punts)
3. successfully make the catch and secure the ball, don't fumble (happens on most punts)
4. if returning, return the punt (happens on some punts)
so the priority is decision making, ability to field the ball, ball security, returning. Given 2 players, the one who excels at the first 3 is the one I want back there in crucial situations.

does chad jones impress you with his return ability?
I think he can catch, but if he actually returned a punt more than 20 yards, i'd be surprised.

his stats last year were 8 returns for 95 yards (11.9 average) with a long of 24. Chad only fielded punts last year when the punter was likely to kick it inside the 20...and for those punts I don't want anyone on the team back there but him.
Trindon was the returner for the other punts and caused many coaches to either punt short or kick it out of bounds. He is explosive but not as reliable as Chad, which is why they split duty. We finished 19th best in punt returns last year, I'm perfectly happy with our punt return game going into this year.

whats LSU ranked in punt returns in the SEC? for 2008?

5th...a whopping 2 yards per attempt behind 2nd place Bama. But that's largely a moot point without some serious context.

gotcha
so all the fans are cool with 5th?
I'd like them to be 1st, but I guess i'm alone on that...

I will go ahead and say this right now whether I think it is a good idea or not doesn't matter but what does matter is that if he did return punts/kicks and he got blasted and ended his career everybody in this damn thread would say that it was a stupid decision to put him back there.......not one of you, or us for that matter, would stand behind our original statement....BOOK IT

no, you're certainly not alone in your inability to analyze single data points within context...although few are probably your equal

What's the big deal? Ryan Perrilloux always played on special teams.

I would worry more about the Kickoff teams feelings.

he's gotta have better hands than trindon. So, if Les thinks he's ready then let's do it!
