Crazier things have happened. We went undefeated in 2011 with a 2-headed QB monster that shouldn't have worked.
However, as I see it - the rest of the West has gotten better - Bama and the Mississippi schools, particularly - really when Miles took over, LSU and Auburn were the 2 big kids on the block, with Arky in the 3rd spot - from 2000 through 2007, one of those 3 teams repped the West in the SEC-CG every single year.
Well, now Arky has waxed and waned (as has Auburn), but the other 4 (now 5, with aTm) will line up and kick our asses if we're not careful. And Miles' style of football hasn't evolved. He got lucky with Mett. I give him a lot of credit for building the team that could do what it did in 2011 - from a defensive standpoint, particularly, but also on a "impose its will standpoint." But, now Bama does that - all year, almost every game. And even if they slip - a little - they get a mulligan.
We're a long way from 1/9/12, but it has been downhill much of the way. There is no reason for a team with this much talent to look so poorly for the 3-game stretch last year or the game on Saturday. What was a set of quirky lapses evolved into a trend and now a pattern.

I am certain you are right in that LSU will endure some hard times during the transition, but it is better than the alternative.

It's pointless to even answer because it won't happen.

Les could win out and I'd still want to move on. I say this because I know there's no way in hell we will. Our offensive line is shite, our QB sucks, and most of all Les sucks. I finally understand why Cam Cameron couldn't hold a job in the NFL despite having Brees, Rivers and Flacco as his QBs. You can't just ground and pound anymore in today's game, you can't. It's all about the passing attack and Miles just doesn't seem to understand that, he is the NCAA version of Jeff Fisher and until Miles moves on, we aren't winning another meaningful bowl game.

If he's 8-1 on 11/6, he'll most likely be 8-4 on 11/27. So "yes" is the answer to your question.

SEC champs or bust. If this team can do that I would give Miles an extension and raise.
Ahhh, no.
He'd get to keep his job. After what we've seen, that would be reward enough.
He's already paid a retarded enough amount for what he's producing. And an extension is utterly out of the question.

there would still be that nagging feeling of dread that now accompanies any LSU season.
Such a precious little snowflake
