Not one of those you mentioned had to build a program like LSU.
Pat Summit and Geno were helped by the National Sports Media in order to build Women's basketball into a National Sport.

I'll repeat what I said in another DB thread. He did more with less, and less with more.

Beef, You are on point. LSU basketball was incredibly exciting under Coach Brown. The victories over UNLV and Loyola Marymount were incedible. The two final fours and one final eight and a sweet sixteen. THE PMAC was rolling in those days.

Plus I loved Sue. She was a terrific person.

I never met her in person, but she endeared herself to me one day when I ended up in an unplanned telephone exchange with her. I had called in to WWL to talk about the men's basketball team, and the screener answered and asked what I wanted to talk about, so I told him, and he said "ok" told me he'd put me on hold and that they'd get to me at some point. While I was on hold, Sue Gunter came in studio to do a segment, so I figured I'd be waiting a while longer. Welp, they went to me pretty much straight away, even though I had told the screener what I wanted to talk about.

I was 16 years old at the time, super nervous, and knew nothing about the women's team. I was totally caught off guard and had no idea what to say. So I just reflexively said "hey coach, congrats on all the success" or something dumb like that, and then tried to bring up the men's team to the host, which was even dumber, considering he was in the middle of a segment with the women's coach, but it was all that I could think to do in my state of panic in not having a single thought to provide about women's basketball. So my call was immediately cut off at that point, and the host started to say something about keeping questions and comments about the women's team, and she interrupted him and addressed me, saying "you're right, coach Brady's team is really playing well right now, and I think we're all excited to see how far they can go". Something along those lines.

I was so embarrassed, even though it wasn't really my fault they stuck me in that position, but when she answered in such a kind way, and didn't act offended that I didn't have a question prepared for her, instead of the entirely different subject I brought up, that meant a lot to me. I started following her team after that.

For a lot of people here all they know about LSU basketball is the post Brady coaches. They were too young for the deaf dome, the Cinderella slipper, the standing in front of a microphone and absolutely shredding the ncaa, the running on the court starting a fight to defend his players. They don't understand that everything that was great about Wade - the fire, the cockiness, the ability to bring talent to BR... all of that was Dale. With a little more showmanship.

I'm going to get down voted to hell but I am old enough to appreciate both Brown and Wade. Wish those 2 could have gotten along.

I'm old enough to have attended his basketball camp in the 80's. I can appreciate Dale Brown and still think the court should have NEVER been named after him.

why is that we don't like Dale Brown again?

I don’t dislike him. I’m sure he’s at least an ok guy irl, but he’s never won a championship at LSU, and he left the program in absolute shambles after Lester Earl’s recruitment, and LSU basketball wasn’t at a good place before that either. If you think a basketball court should be named after him, then you have pretty low standards. This race to name it is absurd.

Then you're probably old enough to remember the Bobby Knight quote on Dale:
quote:

Bob Knight, Indiana basketball coach, responding to a story in which Louisiana State Coach Dale Brown took some shots at him, recalled last season’s Midwest Regionals in which LSU led Indiana, 75-66, with only four minutes left.

“It didn’t look good,” Knight said. “In fact, my assistants had just about given up, and so had I. Then I looked down toward the other bench, and I saw Dale Brown standing there. I knew then that we had a chance.”

Indiana won, 77-76.

Add Knight: Of Brown’s coaching, he said: “To paraphrase Churchill, probably never has so little been done with so much.”

You're also probably old enough to remember the Greatest Comeback in Sports History.

I'm old enough to appreciate John Brady who had to take over a program left in shambles by Brown, and who proceeded to take them to the Final 4.

Prior to Brown LSU basketball had been to the post season like 3 times in our history. Before Brown, LSU basketball wasn’t even a pimple on the butt of the college basketball world. Under brown we went 15 times in a row and we became one of the most dangerous/talked bout brands playing the game.

The man took over a hapless basketball program and achieved some mighty high goals even if we didn’t win a NC

Yep, Pete Maravich never would've come to LSU if not for Brown.

Oh, wait...

I was a student worker in the AD back then. Sue was always so nice and would ask us to practice against her team. Loved that lady.

Sue was pretty involved with Fellowship of Christian Athletes if I remember correct. She came to our banquet one year. First time any of us had met a LSU coach.

Should be called Gunter-Brown Court, period.

I'm sure this sounded real edgy in your mind but even with Pete we never made it to the NCAA tournament and the most wins in a season was 19, iirc, DB put LSU on the basketball map, there's no denying that

My grandfather told this story all the time before he died. Dale Brown was classic underachieving coach.

Yeah, I'm no Dale apologist, anyone here can tell you that. But knight can STTDB! IMHO he was an egotistical bully.
