We have the #2 team in the county. Heisman front runner at QB. #1 offense in the country. A freshman corner that’s would be a first team all American if the season ended today. Maybe the best trio WRs in LSU history.

And we don’t talk about “what could have been” enough?

Now you're getting it!

LSU isn’t the only team that has been affected by Junior defectors.

Of course not, but we have been among the hardest hit if not the hardest.

I remember a graphic CBS posted prior to an LSU vs Alabama game. I dont remember the year or the exact numbers. But I do remember that the graphic was listing the teams who had the most early defectors over the 10 years prior. At that time, LSU was #1 with the most. #2 was Alabama and they had half the number we did. That stuck with me. Hence my long post earlier.

Our number of early defectors is the only thing I criticize LSU for. But to reiterate, guys like Devin White, Peterson, Greedy, countless other DBs absolutely should go early to get their 1st and 2nd round money rather than risk injury. I'll never fault them (although skipping bowl games is questionable). But it seems like for every Greedy we have, we have a Will Clapp, Malachi Dupre, or Toby Weathersby.

After 2011, a player is now better served getting into the NFL and working towards the second contract. Here is a comparison of contracts for the #1 pick:

I don’t think anyone is arguing about automatic 1st round pick going pro, they should and only risk there stock and health by staying.

The problem is all the guys that left and never made it to a second contract. Saban quotes a stat that says 50% of junior defectors have failed careers. It’s not just a skill/experience issue, it’s a maturity issue. In the NFL when you are getting paid big time money you have to behave like a professional and believe it or not 1 year makes a hell of a lot of difference at that age in terms of maturity. That is an area where a lot of our guys failed *cough* Sam Montgomery

) Even if you want to use this silly/unrealistic “what if” to think of how good we would be, you’d have to do the same thing to all the other top schools. We aren’t the only team losing guys early to the NFL

it seems Bama has players stay who would be early NFL draft picks and didn't Clemson have some DL's that were going to go in the 1st round stay another year in 2018?

It does happen that top players stay around sometimes, not unheard of or anything and there was talk that Devin was thinking hard about staying another year.

I never gave it a thought but now that it has been brought up, if Devin White would have stayed our defense would not be looking so sketchy and he would be shooting through the line and blasting opponents QB's. We would probably be the favorites to win the NC right now if he had stayed

Au contraire. There are plenty of welders on TD making $30 million. And that’s starting salary.

Burrow playing the way he is right now will only help O's case for recruiting players to staying their senior year.

Not saying Burrow was ever of thinking of leaving early but the way his draft stock has absolutely shot up sets a perfect example to the younger players of what is possible by playing out your eligibility

I mean, this is completely wrong.

Of course it is for Devin White. I don’t think that’s the kind of player he was referring to, though.

Players also have a limited shelf life and so many years their bodies can remain physically able to play and earn money. So staying another year not only has all risk/no upside, it’s one less year available for him to earn money

Now, THIS is completely wrong unless you’re talking about guys like Devin White or RBs. Or maybe even guys like Ed Alexander who are already playing on borrowed time with chronic injuries.

The average NFL career is 3.3 years. What’s the average career for a welder? Also welders don’t risk being injured never to be able to weld again during their free apprenticeship.

If Devin White stayed for Sr. Year

We’d be 6-0 and ranked #2, and our biggest weakness would be a lack of a pass rush from our front four. Hard to think of a less impactful player to return. Greedy Williams would be MUCH bigger for LSU. The first statement would be unchanged, but at least we could single up all of Bama’s receivers.
