You're not really going out on a limb. If you really want to understand why Kelly was even brought here with a ridiculous contract then you would go back to LSU's serious legal liabilities with Title IX. Anyone paying attention to LSU having to self audit itself to keep the NCAA at bay knew Notre Dame Kelly was not the most ideal fit especially for the trenches and rigors of SEC weekly play.
