with the state of things since 2011, it defies belief that we got something so right in Aranda. its an absolute gift, hes the smartest coach LSU football has had since saban. as a pure DC i think hes actually better.

my worry is that after orgeron, people will want to clean house.

instead of making him HC, we will sit here for the next two years watching the program decline further and further, because thats what we're set up for, and he'll either leave out of frustration or because people will just say frick it.

and that will happen because we're LSU. our own worst enemy.

unleashed and we could be like UGA right now, but shooting ourselves in the foot is what we do best. wasting potential has practically become our trademark.

Part of me wonders if promoting Aranda is even the right decision. Look, I think the guy is one of the best defensive minds in football, but he is a holdover from Miles and O. The program will need a complete and total reset after O is done with it and I think he may have allegiances to assistants or staffers who should otherwise be gone.

Money is good, but even Aranda has to wonder what the cost will be of staying at LSU under this HC

Then we will hire a new DC that will produce great results. He is not the first DC to do well here with our talent pool and won't be the last.

and, yeah, there it is. he's being tainted by O's incompetence. the longer this drags on the worse this mentality will get.

I tend to agree. While I have a decent amount of trust that Aranda would make a great HC, he really might be better suited to be a DC. But I'd like to think he'd be in the ACTUAL frickING SEARCH we'd do next time around.

Search...I almost typed out of that out without laughing. Almost.

Not even saying he's tainted. I believe he is the only coach in the building who O knows not to frick with, because without Aranda things get out of control quickly. It's just from a perspective of changing the perception of the program. Look, I was initially ecstatic at extending Aranda because I thought it meant he would be the next HC, but the more this current regime festers, those doubt, however small, begin to creep up.

Funny, your dad still assumes he's your real father.

Fortunately, Dave Aranda has a significantly different viewpoint on the "state of affairs" at LSU than you do - and he has signed a nice contract to memorialize it. If he chooses to bolt to the NFL, that's his right....and, good for him - especially if that's his dream for the future.

Until then, I think he's content to support, not undermine, his Head Coach - he knows he has some good players to work with at LSU, and I am guessing (unlike many here) that he cherishes the fact that he's working at what is still one of the top 5-10 programs in the country....facilities, budget, recruiting backyard, and historical relevance....notwithstanding his "not too shabby" salary.

I'd much rather LSU ditch both Orgeron and Aranda now than suffer longer under Orgeron with the hope of Aranda taking over afterward.

If only Orgeron had done that for Miles...

Hiring O was a huge, huge frick up and will most likely cost us Aranda in the end.

The repercussions will be far-reaching, that's for sure.

Even if we had Saban, the possibility of losing Aranda would be exactly the same. He'll eventually be offered a HC or NFL job and he'll take it.

some people are simply better, they are uniquely talented, and it is extraordinarily hard to replace them. sometimes its impossible.

obviously we can hire another good DC, but they wont be Aranda, just like Miles was a very good HC, but saban is better.

can you seriously not see that Aranda is one of these people?

I've been trying to think of the W-L record that would justify both (1) firing the head coach and (2) handing the DC the keys to the program, and I just don't see any way that it will happen.

2016 was the time to take a chance on Aranda as head coach. It was obvious at the time.

Once we didn't do that, I figured the best chance for Aranda to eventually be LSU's head coach was for him to leave and spend a couple of years as a head coach at a lesser program, but now that is out because of Aranda's decision to stick around and because the O Era is looking like it is going to be too short for anyone to actually have a coaching career at another school. It might have been a blessing for him to spend a year at A&M as it would have allowed him to add something new to his resume and would only accelerate the end of the current regime. Instead, LSU is definitely going to F it up and the LSU/Aranda relationship will end on a sour note.

imo he could be a better version of Gary Patterson if we let him be, a defensive mind so fricking smart that he doesnt even need a roster of 5's to spike people into the fricking dirt, but would get them anyway with the right staff and the recruiting advantages LSU has over TCU.

but, as this thread has already shown, some people would rather a clean break instead of making him HC.

there is no doubt in my mind that decision would haunt us.

i know the concept of promoting from within twice in a row sounds bad on the surface, but it should have been Aranda over orgeron in the first place. this would simply be correcting that mistake.

Yeah...with this I agree completely. Aranda is NOT Orgeron's hire and for whatever people need to hang around Miles as his faults hiring Dave Aranda was NOT one of them.

This is one that I really would not consider to be much of an inside hire...provided HE cleaned house when he took over. I'd want him to put his own stamp on the entire coaching staff and not simply keep a bunch of hold overs.

This is why you just make him Head Coach. There is so much overstatement regarding handling the media as a college football coach. Everyone has their own personality and he would definitely be more soft spoken than others but honestly who give a shite. The players love and respect him, hes a freaking genius and can coach the crap out of defense.

Bringing Dave Aranda here was probably the best thing Miles could have done for LSU in his final years. After Steele left for Auburn back in 15, it took Miles two seconds to hire Aranda, he already knew he wanted him. Miles could have promoted Peveto. But he didn't. Miles deserves all the credit for bringing Aranda on board.

We cannot let Aranda leave. Give him the keys if that's what it takes.
