Tailgates are now the climax. The game is the half smoked cigarette after.

It definitely got loud during the Arkansas game. My head nearly exploded in OT and on that 4th down. And early on in the Florida game it was very loud.

A friggin Men. This is the EXACT thing killing the game experience. I mean, pumped in Crazy Train??? Are you serious??

Also, it was bad enough when we had to listen to Gerry Lane use our fight song to sell Chevrolets. Now it is being used by a GARBAGE company!!

LSU is all about the almighy dollar and that is killing the game experience.

The only thing that keeps me a fan is that I know 99% of these players will never play at the next level. So their reasons for simply playing the game are more pure.

Skooter is hitting the nail on the head. I would add a few more factors:
1) The expectations have changed from TS's more rowdy days. Now,unless LSU is seriously challenging for a championship interest wanes.
2) The # of games and OOC scheduling. Used to have 5 or 6 home games of which 4 were rivals or big games. Now, we have 7-8 home games of which maybe 2 or 3 are games of interest.
3) Finally, one common denominator through the years has been that Tiger fans have always championed excellence and toughness. Sadly, with rare exception we've seen more underachieving than that over the last two years.

In '07, we had 4-5 great home games. I gave my tickets away to the SC game that year but the atmosphere/crowds were great for VT, UF, AU, and Arky.

It's hard to get excited for Vandy, ULL, LA Tech, and Tulane these days. It's also hard to get excited when our offense puts up a measly three points against Florida. I was bored to tears watching that game.

It's one thing and one thing only IMO:

Winning has brought higher expectations.

Money has got little to do with it to me. I see people that I seriously doubt have much money that do nothing but bitch about the team all game and not cheer at all. It's a factor but I don't think it's that big.

Arkansas game was quiet until the end with the exception of the Holliday punt return. Bama game last year was insanely loud, especially after the blocked FG.

I've been to Bama and AU games before. AU is pretty good, Bama is okay, but what you all are complaining about happens at those schools too. You'd be surprised how common it is for fans to leave early even when the game is close.

I saw Georgia fans leaving in droves in the arse kicking they handed us in the 2005 SEC Championship game. I don't always stick around for home games, but for away games or bowl games, I'll typically stay unless we are getting absolutely destroyed.

unfortunately I can only make it to one or two games a year cause of work and money. I live in tampa, Fl. I wish I could make it to all of them but when I am there I do not sit down.

I love it when people call out the fans and they don't attend the game themselves. Just as bad as the media complaining about fans leaving early when the media is sitting in an area out of the elements. Or, when the media calls out fans for not purchasing tickets when themselves attend games for free.

your right I should not do it since I can't go but when I did live in Louisiana I was there 4 or 5 games a year. Yelling the whole time and enjoying every minute of it. I was starting a topic to find out some more opinions. Wish I still had the opportunity to go that much.

Tampa, great thread.

Nice to see this subject discussed seriously and knowledgeably as an issue, which indeed it is.

I am astounded the people in denial haven't shown up in droves on this thread repeating ad nauseum:

"You guys are wrong! Tiger Stadium has ALWAYS been this way!"

you know, I find this concept of taking away home field advantage in the name of the almighty dollar perhaps in the form of less Ws fascinating.

If I were AD, Chancellor, HC, or TAF, I would use every possible modality to get the stadium filled with loud excited fans. Heck, I would even give away 100 or so per game through some fan process showing their true colors. The way y'all describe LSU is what I sensed at my first UT game a few years after their 98 MNC. Not a good comparison.

Knoxville, this is intriguing. I don't see the athletic department ever doing this. TAF sure as hell never will. The dollar rules.

My question though: other top BCS programs need the cash to feed the monster also, yet their stadiums aren't shadows of their former selves.

With TS's decline in atmosphere, other program's stadium atmosphere and volume have passed us up.

Why?

And yes ... a big part of the LSU legend and mystique is our homefield advantage.

I'm saddened to see that disappearing in the name of the almighty dollar.

I realize it's probably inevitable, but I don't have to like it.

Skooter nailed it. The passionate were forced out and the corporations were sold in.

If you're going to complain about the lack of noise/people staying until the end of game...and blaming this on rising prices and costs, lets not forget that the increase in $$$ definitely helps bring in the sick recruits, facilities, coaches (sometimes).

It comes with the territory. Either be an elite program and have some diffaculties with crowds or have pretty solid program but deafening home crowd.

As a student i ask the same questions... i have told people leaving the student section early to not come back this year and i have also told people to stay at home and watch the game on tv if they want to sit down during the game. my gf has been to every game with me and she doesnt care 2 much for lsu football, but she still gets involved and cheers with the band and ends up having a great time. I really wish it would turn back into Death Valley again.

I hate to say it, nor want it, but LSU will have to hit another valley for the magic to come back.
