I don’t think he was wrong, I just think it was a surface level comment given Mendoza’s profile

It was a "first impression" kind of thought that, I myself had as well.

But in hindsight, if Mainieri had reason to want the Mendoza matchup more, I really can't complain. This isn't a clear cut decision. It was very close to 50/50 IMO.

I'm starting to question your intelligence. The force play didn't come into play. You agree, right?

There was never a force set up, so you're correct. LSU chose to pitch to their upperclass, most dangerous left handed hitter who would've set up the force at third and he hit a single to right field.

No way. Not with a guy that's been killing the ball all post-season that was just drafted in the 3rd round over a freshman in a slump. Just..... no way. You take your chances with the freshman 100 out of 100 times.

If the situation was reversed and Martin had to choose to pitch to Smith in the same exact scenario or walk him to get to, say, Cade Beloso. What do you think he does?

Yea because Eduardo Perez said it on the telecast. Not even knowing their actual leading hitter was on deck.

Acting like you know more about FSU’s lineup than the FSU alum calling the game is cringe worthy even for you.

You’re such a fricking clown.

but In that position when both hitters are rather even, you start down the check list on each and Mendoza’s strikeouts stand out.

Nah, but keep telling yourself that.

Martin has a total of 8 less at bats and they have the exact amount of hits

And 40 less plate appearances. You would think such a cultured baseball fan like yourself would know walks do not count as AB’s

Find me one quote where I called Martin their best hitter.

Oh yea, you can’t.

In every thread where Mendoza is called their best hitter, you've stepped in and corrected people that Martin was their "leading" hitter.

Don't crawfish on a technicality now.

Right, Martin is their leading hitter. Meaning he leads the team in hitting.....When all that is needed to win the game is a hit....

75% of Mendoza’s outcomes do not hurt you in that situation.

A huge part of Mendoza’s value as a hitter over Martin is his ability to draw walks. Tell me how that is a valuable trait in that situation

Over their last 10 games:

Mendoza is batting 333 while Martin is 292.

He also has 7 IBB this season compared to 0 with Martin. I wonder why teams would never find it necessary to talk Martin intentionally, but 7 times it made sense to walk Mendoza?

Oh Lester............... you've called him their leading hitter for 2 days now which is factually false. That would be Salvatore. You're such a fricking weasel on this site.

Most other situations would call for an immediate pass for Mendoza with 100% justification. I’m not shocked at that number.

He was their leading hitter going into last night.

Honest question, do you think leading hitter means best hitter? Cause I can learn you something right quick if you need to know the difference

If you're looking at box scores on LSU's site you're talking a difference of .338 & .336 ba.

Well, he was their leading hitter, and that’s all I said. To think I don’t choose my words cautiously is silly

Mendoza on paper is their best hitter, which is propelled by his walks & ability to hit for extra bases, neither which you are worried about in that instance.

Matters not! The idea is to set up the force since Mendoza's run wouldn't even matter.
Why do you do nothing but play devil's advocate? You've become so friggin predictable.

I am the only person on this entire board that understood what was going on, as Mainieri said verbatim in his post game.

Again this isn’t some taboo move in today’s baseball that is filled with 3 outcome players like Mendoza.

You're backing one of the worst game managers LSU baseball has ever seen.

Jesus Christ.............. Mendoza has 17 more K's in 47 more plate appearances. You're acting like he was a K machine while Martin had some super low K count. This is getting awesome though. You've admitted Mendoza is their best hitter but it was the correct move because the guy on deck was their leading hitter ON THAT DAY by 2 thousandths of a point.
