pete and shaq are obvious and we also have the OG power forward in bob petit

chris jackson is also tGOAT freshman scorer with an avg that will likely never be broken (kevin durant is the closest to come to it)

it's amazing how the fan base collectively seems to shy away from embracing this school's basketball heritage. yeah, the trophy case isn't as stacked as other sports, but LSU has a special basketball history.

I find it strange that LSU is clearly a huge Football and Baseball school yet We will have 2 basketball statues and no football or baseball. Now dont take it the wrong way, Shaq and Pistol are most deserving and im happy Pistol is finally getting one. But why doesnt Billy Cannon have one? Skip Bertman??

Fair point, but ask yourself this...do any past football or baseball players come anywhere close to holding any sort of fame or notoriety comparable to Shaq or Pistol Pete?

When the NBA released it's 50th-Anniversary 50 Greatest Players list, both Shaq and Maravich, as well as Bob Pettit, made the list.

Now, can anyone honestly say that any of LSU's former football or baseball stars would qualify for such an honor in their respective sport? I think not.

Maravich's mystique and legend are only furthered by his early passing. Meanwhile, Shaq is an international icon and arguably one of the biggest sports figures of the last 25 years.

Dude most of those are either:

Dead- cant "go anywhere and be recognized"
Not known by only one name
Not known to fans outside that genre (95% of the US/Europe couldnt pick Adele out of a lineup)
Not known across the world (prince, adele, elvis, ichiro, etc.)
Not an over 7 foot 300 lb black man

You'd immediately recognize Columbus or Pocahontas if they was walking around? But yeah, nice try.

Kobe is more known worldwide than anyone on the planet and the two people that challenge him, and might even be more popular are Ronaldo and Messi.

Everyone in China knows who Kobe is, not sure you could say the same for Ronaldo and Messi, and Shaq is likely known over there as well, but it's more b/c of Yao than Shaq.

What Mascona said about one name Shaq was just retarded.

LSU's all-time starting 5 in basketball of

Pete Maravich
Chris Jackson
Rudy Macklin
Bob Petit
Shaquille O'Neal

is the best all-time starting 5 of any college basketball team ever.

They won a tournament on ESPN.com a decade ago, but ESPN nullified the results because of "voter fraud."

While some of them are dead, the name is still recognizable.

Everyone on that list is known by the name I put on there. (name one that isn't)

Adele is a new one so most people couldn't pick her out, but the others probably could be.

If you don't think Elvis, Prince, and Ichiro are known world wide you are crazy.

Yea I would notice a half naked Native American woman walking around.

My biggest problem with football statues is where do you draw the line?

Go look outside Tiger Stadium at all the plaques of honorees. How many could you make an argument that they deserve a statue? Probably a lot.

I like having the plaques for players. Classy, simple, honorable.

I'm on board with a Skip statue for baseball, mainly because his impact has been far greater than any other individual. Not the same situation as football

YES I'm calling YOU CRAZY. Ichiro is NOT that well known, even in the US... I will GUARANTEE you that my wife would have ZERO clue. And I will also guarantee that approximately 99.9% of the population of South America, Africa, and Australia also have ZERO clue.

ETA: and probably the same for Jeter. While baseball is called "America's Pastime" it's just not that popular as it once was, and DEFINITELY not in South Louisiana, since we have no direct ties, much less GLOBALLY.

We could probably get a statue of Saban made cheap. There's already a mold and it's small so it wouldn't take much bronze.

I LOVE Fournette (the player and the person), but why would he automatically get a statue after winning a Heisman after our sole Heisman winner in 122 years of football doesn't have one?

And then only if he graduates... even if he takes the long road like Shaq.
