A negative fan base is not a good fan base it is detrimental to the team and negative tigers stink !

'a loss' along with 2 wins---I could live with..

Houston is the one that I think we should have won. Stony Brook was the better team. CoC was the better team.
Agreed. Not only was Houston an inferior opponent, but Mainieri's handling of the pitching in that regional was atrocious

Triggered over a CPM discussion as easily as you get triggered in your political drivel.

How would a win affect your view of him? Seems like a lot of people are looking for a reason to shoot CPM down. Baseball is baseball, it's a lot easier for loose underdogs to win in this sport than any other. We are the most spoiled fanbase.

Win or lose, I think he's a great coach. As I mentioned in the OP, I am not a CPM hater. But I know he has many critics due to his recent postseason record. That's why I made this thread for discussion purposes.

I did an in-depth review of MSU's season and individual stats.
This team is very, very good. They've lost a lot of close games.
Their pitching situation isn't as bad as people here make it out to be. Their bullpen has a couple of studs, one of whom threw a CG in the regionals.
Starting pitching after Pilkington is anyone's guess, but it won't matter because none of their other starters go more than 5 with that one exception.
They have 5 really good hitters, two average-to-above-average hitters and two holes in the lineup.
It's going to be a tough series and anyone assuming our road sweep makes this an easy SR draw is fooling themselves.
That said, with Smith and Watson heating up, I like our chances and think we'll take the series. I won't predict if we do it in 2 games or 3.
ETA: Per CPM, it wouldn't change my opinion much unless a bonehead decision on his part costs us the series. If the players lose, so be it. MSU will have earned it at that point.
Only way my opinion changes is if CPM does something dumb that turns a win into a loss.
I just hope he figures out early on if Poche has it in game 2. If not, I hope he pulls him early enough to limit the damage and keep the game close. Same could be said for all starting pitchers, but Lange has shown he can give you 4-5 innings of shutout ball after a rocky start.

mediocre coach at this stage of the postseason.
Mainieri at Super Regionals
2008: 2-1
2009: 2-0
2012: 1-2

2015: 2-0
2016: 0-2
9-6 is mediocre?

I wouldn't be surprised. All the people starting the "I told you so threads" about Lsu having success....all of us who question pm do so not because of his performance in the sec or sec trny, or regional. We do so with the results of the supers and CWs over the last several years. That's the benchmark for Lsu...getting to Omaha and competing there. No one is arguing his success in the sec or regional 4.

6 weeks ago I didn't think this team had much hope of making a Super Regional much less hosting one so I am very happy that we are still playing

He is a fantastic coach no mater what happens this weekend, but he could become great with at least 1 more national championship. This year is his best chance in some time and based on his age this could be his last chance.
If they lose 2 out of 3 to the Dawgs this weekend I will consider 2009 the anomaly and he is simply a fantastic REGULAR SEASON coach, nothing more.

We got swept by Coastal, so it's 9-5. Your point stands though

Not at all. It's basically up to the players to perform to their abilities. CPM can only motivate and direct them so much. Players have to play...

As disappointing as PM's postseason losses are, we have to realize there's so much more parity in college baseball than even a decade ago. In the last 5 years, only 16 out of 40 national seeds made it to the college world series. That matches LSU's percentage of 2 out of 5.
