I think we have both a coaching and talent issue. coaching is probably a harder fix mid season, but there is young talent they’re not seeing the field.

Start:

Weeks over Speights. No Brainer but we seem to lack brains

Womack over Jones: Jones neither gets to the QB, nor sets the edge. even if Womack can do 1 that’s an improvement.

Jefferson Over Smith or at least much more Jefferson. he’s just outplaying Smith.

Welch and Harris CB 1 and CB 2.

Yaites over Burns.

Swinson over Ovie or if we’re playing a more spread oriented team, frick it, Perkins at Jack.

Nice try, but they just hired a D line coach.

Did you watch the game? Welch played. That wasn't the answer either.

looked better than Chestnut or Zy.

we aren’t going to be good. this is about being good enough for our offense to our score them.

Zy was the only one doing anything meaningful in the game, he broke up a couple of passes that could have been TDs

I agree he had some awful moments but he also had a few flashes and I think at this point its more beneficial to let young guys work through it on the field than play veteran guys that also suck.

I also think that Toviano needs to play a lot more if for no other reason than to get him experience. I mean it can't be worse than giving up 700 yards and 55 points.

He looked better than neither. He was lost. Playing zone in man coverage. Playing man in zone. Lucky he went to the right lockerroom at half.

I think Chestnut is completely over matched...but he at least forces the QB to throw a fairly good ball. Zy has been our best DB. The tallest midget if you will.

Another question would be, can any of our CBs play safety? I mean they are all a step slow at CB it seems but maybe they would be good as a safety?

Given that none of them can tackle except Alexander a little bit, no.

And if we moved any of them to safety, who the hell plays corner? Of course not fielding a corner would be the same as what our corners do.

They play entirely different positions but Swinson and Womack should be your rotation at JACK. Ovie is as unathletic of a football player as you'll see at this level.

I actually thought Zy Alexander played his best game but Welch warranted some future snaps. Stamps did not. Slow, timid, small. Not sure what they see there.
Harris' missed tackle late is a direct result of him being coached to play a mile off of the WR.
Most of the big pass plays against the defense the past two weeks have come from coverage busts, not the corners getting torched.

This is the worst the safety position has ever been at LSU. The Ronald Martin Corey Thompson combo was pretty bad but at least both of those guys could tackle.

Maybe not this game since it's on the road, but I'd be ready to start the youngsters at home or at least give them significant playing time. We're playing for 24' now. I know there's an outside shot at still winning the west, but I think that's very unlikely.

I agree with all the OP info.....but it aint going to change anything...maybe we give up 690 instead of 710.

Maybe we do get a sack out of 40 pass attempts. But 3rd and 15 is almost as easy as 3rd and 5 against us.

Bingo. I am tired of watching our Safeties miss tackles and I am tired of watch DEs fail to contain.

I disagree. If you don’t have talent, you can’t change that. If you have poor coaching schemes, you can change that.

our defense cannot get worse.

so i don’t see this as a “we’re playing for next year” move.

play the young guys because they have more talent.

you’re not getting anything out of the older guys. why not just try putting the best athletes out there

With one more SEC loss I would agree, but right now if we beat Bama and run the table, we may still end up in Atlanta. We still have a lot to play for this year, but that also doesn’t prevent us from playing the younger, more gifted players either.
