quote:

The 1416-year-old religion of Islam had a golden age. It was an era that was marked by scientific temperament, remarkable inventions and discoveries. If you believed it, then you too are a victim of a myth that was consciously created and mainstreamed by a Wikipedia editor, ‘Jagged 85.’

The year was 2012. The infamous editor was banned from the ‘free encyclopedia.’ But the damage was already done. He had made over 87,000 article edits since 2005. He used dubious anecdotes, fraudulent quotations and unverified sources to peddle the narrative that Muslims made massive scientific developments and revolutionised mankind through their discoveries and inventions.

This is insane

Tl/dr:

quote:

The "Islamic Golden Age" is one of the biggest pieces of trash and one of the most unscientific theories that has ever existed, and it cannot be proven by any serious primary sources. They copied and translated the achievements of the Greeks, Persians, Indians, Egyptians, Spaniards, and Jews, and then they destroyed the artifacts and inscriptions. There is literally no historical continuity or confirmation that Arabs invented many things before others. This is Islamic propaganda that was pushed through Wikipedia and by anti-Western academics who used sources that change the narrative to fit their agendas.

Eh, no.

I’m not listening to this but I remember reading about this before Wikipedia ever existed…. In the 1990s.

There were major mathematical and other breakthroughs happening in the middle Middle Ages in that part of the world

The idea of a Muslim Golden Age long predates Wikipedia.

Wiki editors may have embellished it

The “Muslim golden age” is a myth invented by the same people who claimed native Americans were peaceful, Africans were kangz, Slavery was a uniquely western evil, etc

The Islamic golden age is absolutely a myth pushed by the usual white guilt ridden apologists, but Wikipedia didn’t invent it. It’s been around.

This claim of an Islamic golden age should raise eyebrows of anyone who gives any thought to it. It’s ok to question things sound wrong. Kind of like that instance statistic that something like 75% of college students are sexually assaulted.

You know how goofy this myth is? Real adult humans will say, in all seriousness, that the Islamic golden age was a time of grandeur and learning across the entire Middle East and North Africa. But it all came to a tragic end when Baghdad was sacked by the Mongols. Yes, the sacking of one single city 800 years ago permanently derailed the entire glorious civilization. We’re supposed to believe that.

So many people know so little about history. It's why there is little reaction when clerics insist that Alexander the Great converted to Islam (for example).

What a bald face lie. Alexander died many centuries before the time of Islam.

History is not cut and dry. The decline of the Abbasid caliphate (who is usually associated with this period was weak. The rise of multiple Turkish groups, the crusades, the mongols all at times dominated the abbasids. Ultimately, in think the Seljuk Turks and then the ottoman predecessors were truly the most impactful group on the region.

However, that does not mean that there was not a scientific and trade explosion happening at the time where there was a major crossroad of ideas happening between east and west

I think they might have stolen this from India. Certainly a lot of their math came from there.

Much of the “Arab” or “Muslim” breakthroughs were Jews, Zoroastrians, and Nestorians in the region. Many times non Arabs or non Muslims would take Muslim names to blend in. As Islam took firmer hold and inevitably became more fundamentalist, those breakthroughs ceased.

It’s no coincidence that the entire region has been a backwater ever since Islam drove out the other religions. Otherwise, what could explain the sudden and forever ending of this golden age?
