I doubt Mondo makes even 500k if he goes pro.

I think you are way wrong, but let’s assume you are correct. If he makes $500k per year why would he stay at LSU during some of his prime earning years?

Well, Usain Bolt did and there may be a handful of other high profile athletes in the glamour event of 100 meters and the Marathon that make 1 or 2 million

I often wonder what would be his net worth if he was an American athlete.

Lolo Jones is a woman that ran hurdles and never did well in the Olympics.

And she's a millionaire.

Not the best example if you're trying to counter

Other than endorsements

Why would you qualify it like this?

Endorsements are how they're paid. Nike/New Balance/Adidas/etc. compete to sign the top T&F athletes. That is essentially their salary.

Xavier Carter signed for like 750k with Nike out of LSU.

ETA:

Boris Berian gets like $125k a year base salary from New Balance and 5 figure bonuses for placing in events. That is not counting other income he may get from winning events, other non-competing endorsements, coaching clinics, etc. And this dude runs the 800m. Nobody outside of T&F fans know that guys name.

The bottom line is that there is a very limited earning window in T&F and Mondo is in it. IF he becomes the best pole vaulter in the world (which he's on track for), he stands to make a very, very good living.

Depends on the NCAA, if they allow athletes to profit off of their likeness then he may finish out his eligibility.

The NCAA actually allows athletes to be paid by their home country for getting a medal in the Olympics.

That being said I wouldn't be surprised to see him go pro after this season, or at the very least take a redshirt year to get ready for the 2020 Olympics.

Because I was questioning whether there are pro track and field teams that pay salaries.

Diamond League purses, appearance fees, bonuses given by the meets for breaking their own records, and potentially in Mondo’s case, bonuses for breaking the world record. He is 11 centimeters off the world record set in 2014 already as a teenager.

Last year was the least lucrative year in the Olympic cycle because it is the only one without an Olympics or World Chanpionship and Mondo didn’t even complete the entire Diamond League cycle because of school. He still would have collected about 70K in prize money and that’s not including appearance fees, potential bonuses for breaking course records, etc.

And honestly, Kendricks is damn near Mondo’s floor, which is insane. Kendricks is an amazing pole vaulter who has done everything you can dream of besides win an Olympic gold, and Mondo already has a higher career best than a guy at his prime. Despite that, the only thing that Kendricks has over him is consistency.

There are a few. It isn’t a huge thing, and some of the leading guys never join one because they would rather strike it on their own and make their money through salaries, appearance fees, and prizes. That can be just as lucrative.

Also, the teams I can think of haven’t had pole vaulters before, and probably wouldn’t sign one unless Mondo was even closer to the world record.

This is really an estimate, but I think a combined 500K endorsement + prizes + appearance fees total is reasonable for a non-Olympic year between now and his age 30 season. That doesn’t include the money he would get from Sweden (maybe 100K a year) or the USTFA (less than that but not 0). Track endorsements are highly opaque and were even more closed off before Boris Berian’s Nike lawsuit that got him free from his initial deal.

Just posted on another thread. IF he breaks the NCAA mark in a few weeks, do NOT expect him back. Their would be no reason for him to come back athletically. Young man needs to start getting paid for his unbelievable talents.

I would think his Olympic results will dictate that. If he medals at such a young age he’s gone.

He tied for the highest vault in the world LAST YEAR, and he won (as in first place) the European championship. A silver medal in the Olympics won’t affect his status at LSU one iota. I doubt that a gold would either. He is already at the pinnacle of his sport. He was there before he came to LSU.

We have something in common. We both have ZERO inside sources. Difference between you and me is that I don't claim to have any, but you do.

With 2020 being the Olympic year he may stick around for his soph year at lsu
After Olympics he will probably go pro

He didn't even really do that many meets this year so he could finish his college season (limited meets) and then still get ready and train for Olympics later that year.

Or I guess go over to Europe where competition is better to compete and train leading up to Olympics
ending his lsu career

lolo Jones was one hurdle from setting the world record in the Olympics. She had a fantastic few years leading up to the Olympics and just stomped everybody in every competition . That is a terrible example.

I hope she comes to Austin to make an appearance next month at the NCAA championship.
