LSU is M.I.A. in the top 50. I count 6 other SEC schools on the list (as of MAR11): D1 Team Batting Average. Oddly enough, Arkansas did not make the top 50 either - 2 spots behind LSU.

LSU (#56): .289
ARK (#58): .288

Will pitching and HRs carry the load?

Nearly 40% of that top 50 have played less than 10 games

It’s not that important, anything around .300 is competitive. Pitching seems more important. Low team ERA translates better IMO

Despite that, 6 other SEC schools have higher team avg.

This has nothing to do with the top 50 list. Comparing to other SEC schools is much more apples to apples, and is a discussion worth having. Comparing LSU to teams that have played a series or less is useless

So the number 1 team in the country is behind LSU... and you are worried about this particular stat?

Teams can win multiple ways. It looks like LSU is going to live and die by the long ball this year.

The secret to winning for LSU this season: Good pitching, good defense and the three-run home run...

Vanderbilt team OPS is 1.011
They have SEVEN guys with a .400 or higher OB%
and SIX guys with a .500 or higher Slugging %

LSU team OPS is 0.865 for comparison which is not bad but is 7th/8th in the SEC.

That's what playing all of your home games in a stadium with a 310 foot left field fence from home plate can do for a team...

For comparison, Alex Box Stadium's left field fence is 330 feet from home plate.

There are many variables that contribute to early season stats like opponent pitching ability, size of ballparks, number of plate appearances, etc. All that eventually averages out after about the first 3 SEC weekend series.

Regardless, other than home runs, LSU is a middle of the pack offensive team in the SEC. Just stating facts.

I want LSU to be successful and I hope they continue to inprove.

Not that batting avg isn’t important, but as stated already, it’s less important than on-base percentage. And that’s all relative to ERA and fielding percentage, too. A team with a very low ERA and high fielding percentage won’t need to score as many runs per game in order to win.

Of course.

My point was this early in the season when Vandy has played 12 home games and only 2 away games and their home stadium has a short left field where long fly balls turn into doubles rather than being caught short of the warning track for outs at other stadiums, it's pretty meaningless to compare Vandy's slugging % to other teams.
