100 yds back in those days

There is no telling where he’d start on LSU but it would be somewhere.. his measurables in modern time would be close to fournette.. he was faster but probably not as allusive.. he was a world class athlete that could’ve played nearly any position outside the trenches.

Would a 20 year old Billy Cannon be the starting RB for the 2018 LSU Tigers?

...fast enough to outrun the camera on Halloween night!

I'll argue that as an athlete Cannon was a freak. He was he fastest guy on the team in his time by a lot and he was the biggest. I believe he was somewhere around 210 lbs when he played.
He had Olympic type speed back then and it's not a bad time now if he had a 9.4 in the 100.
He could probably start today with those measurables

We have actual measurables to look at for him specifically
He was 6'1" 207 lbs and ran the 100 yard dash in 9.6 seconds and threw a shot put 56 feet
He would play today

I once spoke to an old SEC player once about Billy Cannon who played against him. His words to me were " Son, he was a man and we were just boys, they don't make players like that anymore."

Pretty true, because of the over saturated nature of yute sports today it’s harder to be a multi sport athlete

The absolutely have freaks today like Cannon
Come on man

Not trolling but trying to think of some examples
every generation does produce freakish type athletes though, you’re right about that, it’s one thing to be a multi sport athlete but quite another to dominate at every endeavor, in addition to everything already mentioned in this thread, Cannon was an all pro at two positions, the second of which he’d never played before

The quote said "They dont make em like Billy anymore"
I disagree. There are now athletes even stronger and faster than Billy. But Billy would absolutely still be a stud today as well
If he is saying people cant dominate across sports anymore, I would agree

Billy lifted weights before they became a necessity. He trained under Alvin Roy, later the 70's great Pittsburgh Steelers strength coach. He trained Gayle Hatch, too.

In those days it was the 100 yd. dash....9.4 was really fast. I've heard from players during Billy's playing days that he was the fastest guy on the field.

Not true. There were some terrific athletes in my day. They just weren't exposed to physical developed at the same age level that kids are today.
In addition, back then you had a good number of white kids who could run and jump as well as many of the black athletes. Today the white athlete is rarer, in large part because of societal changes in the family. Video games and "everybody is a winner" soccer matches have resulted in skinny kids with man buns who need safe spaces.
