DT: Its not out of the realm of possibily that Maason Smith was never fully healthy and in shape this year. If he comes back and is closer to what he was supposed to be his soph year then thats a huge plus. If Wingo comes back thats also a huge plus. Then we get Shone Washington and possibly a transfer or two and the DT position could be much better next year.

DE: Womack is a stud and I assume he will get more playing time. Plus Wiggins could live up to his recruiting ranking. We also get Jones and Shand back and both of those guys flashed at times. If these players all improve, we could also be much better at this position.

LB: Greg Penn is what he is and thats an average to slightly above average college LB. Whitt Weeks should blow up next year as a starter. And then there is Perkins. I assume they will try to play him inside again and see if it sticks this year. If he figures it out, Weeks and Perkins could be an incredible LB combo.

Edge: Swinson flashed and should get the start next year. I also think that Womack could get some reps at this spot too. We also have a few freshman that could step up here so we should be better at this spot as well.

CB: This will fully depend on Alexander getting healthy, what we have in JK Johnson, how much Stamps and Toviano can improve, and what transfers we can lure here. The good news is that it honestly can't be worse than this past season.

S: We need transfers, the freshman like Yates, Allen, and maybe Toviano to grow up, or McBride to come in and be a stud. Burns sucks so if he's our best safety next year we are in trouble.

In conclusion: I think we could be a pretty good defense next year if our current players develop and we get the right transfers.

solid post...

look for one more big DT (hopefully) and we also get some safeties.. one corner for sure..

I want to see a big arse hybrid safety that comes downhill on a RB like there is no tommorrow..

Gimmie LaRon LAndry or SEan Taylor 2.0 find that SOB in the portal and pony up...

Maason smith has no buisness going pro.. none..

Wiggens Womack and Savion need to produce, period..

I'd love that too but this style of safety has all but gone the way of the DoDo bird. Thumpers can't cover and in today's spread, RPO world, you need your safeties to be able to cover.

This unit excelled in 2022

No, it absolutely did not. It wasn't bad enough to lose us games, but it under no circumstances "excelled". We gave up tons of yards and points to very bad teams, and didn’t really hold anyone with a functioning offense under 30 points.

Maybe House needs more time, and more talented players.

Here we go. You knew it was coming.

I'll give you that we definitely need better quality players, but the guys we have this year were very poorly coached. Constantly lining up wrong, looking completely lost in coverage, poor tackling, etc. That's coaching my friend.

Yeah give this fabulous "new DC" of yours the same shite show House had to deal with and YOU will be the first one to call for his head after 1 year.

I dunno. House didn’t inherit that entire situation. A season removed from “muh 39 scholarships,” it seems like he whiffed on a fair share of transfers as well as position coaches. (That may also fall on BK.)

If he was making adjustments and we just didn't have the players and he was recruiting at a high level this year I might could be on that train, but not to spy bama or ole miss and how sad our recruiting for dl and db he's got to go.

Great breakdown. Add Kylin Jackson as someone may develop at safety with lots of potential.

You have an influx of young inside linebackers coming in, but you can’t count on that next season. Regardless of where they play Perk, I would go after heavily a big time ILB in the portal…weeks becomes a dude next season. I would rather Penn as your third guy inside

It can’t get any worse. I don’t understand why we havnt hired a new DC yet. We had decent enough talent not to be as bad as we were and yet here we are still sitting on one of the worst defensive coach in the country

Issues this year were mainly scheme and lack of adjustments and game planning. A good defense coordinator can have that group top 30 defense in a year no problem
