How far has Joe come? What were your first impressions?

Just looked at highlights from his first game
LSU -Miami 2018
Stat line
11/24. 140 yards. 0 touchdowns. 0 interceptions
Ffwd to LSU-TAMU
23/32. 353 yards. 3 TDS 0 interceptions
What a transformation!
I thought he was good, but had zero thought he was this good.
What were your First impressions of Joe?
When did you figure out how good he was?

There’s was always a sense that he had “it.” You could tell his leadership and toughness was always there. And there was obviously a reason why so many osu folks were upset to lose him.

Liked his attitude and the way he competed but figured he was slightly better than Etling. May give us a shot at beating Bama but wasn't confident.
I went all in after his performance vs A&M and UCF. You could see his accuracy improved and his ability to manipulate the defense presnap.
Still I never thought he was going to lead one of the most lethal passing attacks ever to grace a cfb field.
I mean damn, that still hasn't sunk in, Ole War Skule Ground and Pound U has rewritten records on offense. Don't pinch me, if it's a dream I'll just stay asleep.

At first I just blew that off as he was an Ohio boy and backup QB is always the favorite right?
Wrong lol

The first thing I noticed about him was his understanding of how to play the position at a high level mentally. In the Miami game with very little time at LSU it was a running play that showed this. After surveying a look from Miami’s D he made a check to run that resulted in a long Broussette TD to take the lead for good in that game. Even though we didn’t have an explosive plan and his numbers weren’t great he kept us in good to workable situations all night and it told me regardless of physical talent he was so good between the ears that he would be an asset and upgrade from what we’d seen at LSU recently. Then moving ahead to this season, aside from the new offense, he made great strides to correct accuracy issues and velocity. Last year he had a habit of standing flat footed in the pocket, especially on shorter drops, which led to accuracy issues. This year from the first game you could see his foot work was much better. He was up on his toes from the start which not only changed his ball placement and accuracy but also allowed him to navigate the pocket much easier. Instead of bailing and running, which he did so well last season, he’s been able to step and slide seamlessly resulting in tons of explosive plays downfield. That’s just one example of his progression but it’s the one that sticks out most to me. He’s been an absolute dream to watch at LSU.

I love watching his film when he points of a blitz that the defender thought he had disguised to slide protection. It deflates them before he snaps the ball.
Smart QB's are much more fun to watch than pure athletes. It's the game within the game.

Agree 100%, with guys who’ve got it figured out upstairs it’s like watching a work of art. My favorite game of alltime when it comes to a QB performance is still Super Bowl 24 when Montana shredded the #1 ranked Denver D 55-10. Of course athletic QBs are dazzling but there’s a sense of helplessness you can see in a defense when they’re facing someone like Burrow.

Exactly! They feel defeated before every snap. They know he is about to light them up and they may as well have just sat down lol.
I see him as a Peyton Manning clone in the mental game but with a Tebow drive to win.
Call me crazy but I believe he will end up better than either.
(Tebow he will surpass soon)

It puts such a strain and stress on a defense. It causes them to take more risks and compounds the problems even more. I like your comparisons but I don’t want to make impossible expectations for him. I do think because of his mind and heart he can be successful but I hope he ends up anywhere but Cincinnati. I like Flores so maybe Miami could be better for him. If I had to compare him I’d say he’s a lot like Troy Aikman. Same exact size 6-4, 216 both very accurate, great leaders, ultra competitive and if you remember before he started getting hurt Aikman was very mobile. He started out at Oklahoma in Barry Switzers wishbone offense. Mechanically they’re different (release, feet) but everything else they remind me of each other.

This is one of the most well thought out posts I’ve seen. I love football, but don’t have a sense of the x’s/o’s like others as I was a cross country runner. Very cool and enlightening.
I have a sense that Joe is studying the heck out of film this week and will definitely have an answer for the “vaunted” Georgia D.

Joe had presence and a football IQ we hadn't seen in a long time. I knew he would break LSU records this year.

I thought he would be good, probably very good. Certainly good enough to lead us to a championship of some kind with what I thought would be an incredible defense.
I never imagined this.

I knew he was pouring it in, but was like wow
23/27 278 yards 5 touchdowns va Ga southern.
He has been eating those wheaties

I used to get aggravated when the pocket was collapsing around him and he would get sacked. I never knew he actually could hustle.

I loved Joe Burrow from day 1. Never wavered from that for a second.

How far have YOU come, OP? Joe had the goods from day 1.
1) Joe's targets were limited in last year's stone-age passing scheme. Usually one or two viable targets.
2) The routes were often slow-developing
3) The WRs were grossly under-prepared for SEC defenses, thus ultra-high drops
4) This season's Spread gave Joe 4 and 5 valid targets
5) The WRs were well-prepared to catch everything that was thrown to them
6) Joe sees the open zones immediately, and gets the ball there with high efficiency
This is the offense scheme Joe was promised when he transferred, and O delivered as soon as he reasonably could.
