As for the original question: As much as he pisses me off at times, Miles has to be considered one of the top 5 coaches in CFB. NO ONE wins 80% of their games in this conference on luck and talent alone. Anyone who says otherwise clearly has an agenda.

This.

Currently, every coach in America is considered second to Saban. Using this as the assumption the only way to not be second to Saban is to be Saban. So, since Saban is now a Gump and will never be a Tiger again, I don't let it gnaw at me. Only the people that wish Saban was still here allow it to gnaw at them which is why they dislike Miles.

If I can't have the coach that most of the country believes is Number 1, I am damn glad I have a coach that can be considered Number 2. That does not mean I am satisfied with second place, it means I am a realist, something the improperly named "realist tigers" should actually try.

This isn't true. I wish Saban was still here, but I have accepted it and moved on. In fact, if you were here way back when, you would have seen lots of Tiger fans who couldn't and laughably acted like he really wasn't that great of a coach.

However, there are still plenty of things I don't liek about Miles. Like in game decisions, clock management, dartboard esque game plans. He just doesn't seem to have grown as a coach in some critical areas.

Bobby Bowden was at FSU for a long time before they became the powerhouse they were in the 90's. So I still want to keep him.

Yeah we need perspective every waking fricking moment. I give the credit for LSU's wins to the players, the assistants, the money the athletic program allows to be paid towards our assistants, the fan base and Les Miles. Stop acting like Les miles is solely responsible for every win LSU has ever had during his time at LSU.

Could say this about every coach, Idiot.

I was a lurker back then. I always felt that was one of the reasons Saban bailed is he wasn't getting the love in '04 he thought he should, and he really wasn't. He had done so much for LSU football and some idiots were tossing him under the bus.

Les Miles could only be truly measured as a football coach if it were only him calling all the plays offense and defense against other coaches doing likewise. If that doesn't happen then you can't help but consider who plays a part in getting LSU to the point its at, and the answer is many people.

Jesus tap-dancing Christ.

You dumbasses have absolutely no comprehension of what it takes to coach a college football powerhouse. You almost unanimously tout Saban as the best coach in the country, but fail to account for his abysmal record in the NFL. Look, I think Saban is a great coach, but I also understand that certain coaches do well in certain places because coaching at this level is about much, much more than the Xs and Os.

Start at the ground level. A certain talented Louisiana prospect commits to LSU. He is recruited by some assistant coach and is attracted to LSU because of the recent success and facilities. That coach is on the staff because Miles chooses to have him there. That success has been maintained under Miles. Those facilities are constantly improved under Miles.

LSU may win games despite Miles' Xs and Os ability, but he is directly responsible for every player and assistant coach at this program. If it weren't for Les, NONE of them would be here, so he is instrumental in the success of this program.

No, but FSU won 2 NCs and played for 2 others in the 90's.

Here's a news flash.

If LSU gets past A&M, and then beats Bama......

Miles and Saban will be essentially tied, with the top winning percentages in the country.

How will all the Miles Haters deal, when....

CLM = Nick the Coaching God?

There's not a person on this rant who, in 2005, wouldn't have been overjoyed to know that that's how the next 7 1/2 years would turn out for LSU Football. If Saban had stayed at LSU and posted an identical record, there'd be a statue of him in front of Tiger Stadium. All Les gets is the hot seat every year! You guys are nuts!

it's THIS thread again…. we REALLY needed to discuss Miles' W/L record again, too…. i mean, there hasn't been a thread like this in like 4 hours, so we probably would have had a meltdown if not for your brilliance, PP….

for frick's sake, can we let it go, that yes, Miles, STATISTICALLY, has a high ranking…. but as far as being a good X's and O's coach, being able to adapt to an opponent in game, etc., he leaves A LOT to be desired and there are many, many coaches out there that could walk circles around him….

Miles= great recruiter, great family man, great with managing the program, good with the players, but bad at clock management (still), bad at gameplanning, bad at X's and O's, mediocre with playcalling….

This is all correct and pretty much sums it up. Look give Les 2 good coordinators and you have a recipe for a great team. Give Les one good coordinator and you have a recipe for a good team.
Les is a good manager but a poor strategist. We use timeouts like a fat man uses rolaids.

I support Les and appreciate the difficult job he has done. But, he gets a little bit of money and benefits to do the job. We just need to keep Chavis happy and get the best OC we can and we will be just fine.

Depends on what you define as good job. Les Miles has been apart of LSU sustaining what Nick Saban and his staffs worked hard to build up.
Saban at LSU: 8-4, 10-3, 8-5, 12-1, 9-3
Usually finished ranked somewhere in the top 20, with 1 national title, and also won the Sugar Bowl. 47-16 in 5 years, or about 9-3 average. Went to Atlanta twice, once as an underdog, and once in a pick-em, and won both.

Miles followed that with: 11-2, 11-2, 12-2, 8-5, 9-4, 11-2, 13-1, and now has us 6-1. Usually finished ranked in the Top 5, with 1 national title and one other appearance. Also won Sugar. Not counting this season, Miles went 76-18 in seven years, or 11-2/10-3 (more often 11-2) average. Went to Atlanta 3 times as the favorite, won twice.
Currently 6-1, ranked #6.

Miles built on what Saban started, not just sustained it. Went from being a 1 hit wonder to an annual power.

but, LSU recruits itself... any coach can do it...

Really? Look a little to the east- Auburn.
Tuberville overall, 85-40. Just during the same seasons Saban was at LSU, Tubs records: 9-4, 7-5, 9-4, 8-5, 13-0. Total during Saban's tenure was 46-18, average 9-3, or basically identical to Saban. No title, but 13-0 vs 12-1.
In 10 years, average of 8-4. Went to Atlanta twice, both occurring during Saban's tenure here, and went 1-1.

Chizik followed Tubs with 8-5, 14-0, 8-5. 1 trip to Atlanta, won 1 title. Average is good, 10-3, but 2 of those seasons he finished 4th in the West, and this season he's 1-5. That's what I'd call initially sustaining, then crashing, and it isn't anywhere near what Les has done here.

Dig deeper into the opposition during their tenures at LSU:
during Saban's time, his team was the only SEC team to play for a BCS title. Auburn was the only other legit contender, but was left out.

During Miles time, Florida (twice), Alabama (twice), and Auburn have won it in addition to us.

So Miles has a better record, against a better conference. Plan and simple, he's been a better head coach at LSU than Saban was. More successful, against better teams. If you subtract each coach's best season, Miles has the next 4 best records before you get to another Saban season.

sorry for being so long-winded
