The qb at Alabama doesn't really move me either. Or Alabama for that fact.

Both QBs were four stars. Jefferson was on Bama's sideline and was recruiting by Bama. That comment is for the Sabanites.
Lee was one of the top QBs out of Texas that year. Either he never panned out, got thrown in to early, or never got the confidence of the coach. Offensive scheme was different than what he knew in high school. He was part of a pass-option offense and played out the shotgun. LSU going to more a power set with a mobile QB probably set him back a bit.
Off comment: I really hope we go to more a power-pro set, play action and such. I think we have the QBs for the next 4 to 5 years along with the other players to make this work.

I can't explain it either. JJ & JL made for a terrible 4 year saga that we all want to forget. But its not like they were the only two QB's on the team. Underclassmen can have success. Tebow was a big part of UF's first BCSNC in his freshman year and AJ won it all as a sophmore this year. Oh well, the JJ/JL era is over, lets let it die

Well, lsu got a highly regarded JUCO transfer who was sitting there on the bench all year with no meaningful playing time. He was quickly declared 3rd string in the spring.
LSU also had a QB from Mississippi who left after a year or two. Forget his name.
JJ and JL like someone said were highly regarded QBs.
The great Hatch left.
It really has been a strange and sad few years for the QB position at LSU.
And what's his face went to the Dodgers.

quote:Yes. But people on this very Rant said with total confidence in their sources (also prob. from the Rant) that Shep was never recruited to play QB. I called BS then, I still say BS now. He was recruited to play QB. But something went wrong at the top and it became the JJ show. But that show is now cancelled due to eligibility expiration. The worry now must become how will CLM screw up the next set of QBs?
I really wonder if Shep even got a real chance to compete at QB. For him to never throw a pass is amazing considering he was the #1 rated dual threat qb. I wonder what Chip Kelly or Rich Rod couldve done with him.

I realize RP accounted for the first year (or two?), but who was the heir apparent after RP? Why did we not seek a transfer player or JUCO? Why did we just ride this lame fricking rollercoaster for 4 years?
Both JJ and JL were obviously not SEC caliber QB's (each had their moments, but the body of work of both players is subpar to put it mildly).
This 4 year saga was sort of a microcosm of Monday night's game, we didnt do or try anything to change it, we just rode it out hoping it would somehow correct itself.
J LEE go back and look . 3 ints this season . JJ one safety , lol the shuttle pass to a surprised Bama defender , you are right about JJ he should have never been in the SEC with the ducks he would have been a super star

You are right, this why preparation helps out.
Let revisit the QB situation/recruitement under Miles
2005, we have 2, RS Soph QB's. He lands the #1 player in state a 5* QB, RS him the next year, so far so good. No QB in 2006 class this is a mistake. Anyone with a brain can figure out that 1 out of JR or Flynn will be gone after the 06 season (either one goes pro or transfers), they sign Lee in 2007. That leaves you with a Sr, RS Soph and a true frosh as you QB's. 08 again only 1 QB, JJ. Even if RP pans out, you are an injury, or bad grades or someone not panning out away from having no depth. 09 you get 2 QB's one you convert to WR and don't use and a guy that you kick off the team a year later. So in 2010, you have 2 Jr QB and NO ONE behind them, with that in mind, you recruit ONE QB that is a projected 1st round MLB pick.
So JJ/JL is what happens when you have no depth, that's caused by having no forward looking plan. The brightside is, it seems like they've learned the lesson moving forward, we should have depth the next couple of years with Mett, Rivers, Kiel and Randall.

I agree with you. I recall hearing that RS was going to get a shot at QB, and if it didnt work out he would be moved to WR. The guy loves LSU and wanted to come here, but its crazy to think the #1 dual threat QB couldnt go elsewhere and get a shot at QB. He wasnt rated as a WR, but as a QB.

Well, the program regained its' elite status this year, during this mess. So, overall, the overall program most be very strong.
Perrilloux was a big part, in that by getting him we weren't a good fit for other players for a couple seasons. Note that Ohio St didn't have some superstar sitting behind Terrell Pryor. Note that the 2 seasons that Perrilloux missed, but would have been an upperclassman and starter, were the only 2 that LSU failed to win at least 11 games and finish in the top 5.
Last year and this year, the past 2 years of the JJ/JL mess, we finished 24-3, won the Cotton convincingly, won the SEC with an undefeated season, and played in the BCS national title game.
I'd say that indicates those 2 guys did pretty well on the college level, and they both had some decent tools. Nothing that would get either drafted.
Sheppard was a swing and a miss apparently, but then to be fair, aren't most athletic QBs coming out of high school playing another position in college? Zach Lee was given a couple million bucks to not stay here.
Now we give a 2nd chance to Mettenberger after he had possibly a worse off-field incident than JJ did, redshirted the younger brother of an NFL QB (who may or not have his brother's skill), and just signed the top QB prospect in the country.
I'd say things are pretty solid.

Easy. This year's Heisman winner said it himself. "I am rooting for LSU. Go Tigers. I might have gone there, but they wanted Jordan Jefferson."

True, although I still can't believe Mett couldnt have done a better job. QBs come in for other teams and do well their first year, and Mett had a year at UGA and a year at JUCO so he wasnt right out of high school.

RG3 wouldve made an awesome WR at LSU!

I dont think so, only bc I have faith in Krags as a QB coach. There hasnt even been a QB coach on the staff til this year.

I think JL career would have been good to above average at LSU had RP not been booted. JL would start as a JR and you wouldn't had pick 6 freshman season.

i could've sworn we just won the SEC and played in the NC.
the fact that LSU won as many games as they did with 2 very mediocre QBs is a testament to Miles and staff coaching ability
