re: How Close Is the Offense to Being Really Good?

I am of the opinion that Mett is best suited to throw deeper passes versus shorter routes. He is not the most accurate passer but throws a nice deep ball and is normally pretty good at putting the ball where it is hard for the defender to intercept (on deep balls but not so much on shorter routes). I think this is what is missing from our offense.
This is important for 2 reasons IMO: (1) improve our offense by allowing our QB to play to his strengths and (2) stretch the field vertically so that it is harder for defenses to pack the box which should lead to a more effective running game against a defense the caliber of Alabama.

Put it this way. If Mett didn't overthrow those deep ball opportunities we'd have blown out SC and we wouldn't be an underdog or at least not by much. This offense is ready to take the next step.

How Close
I re-watched the A&M game last night. I flew from Atlanta to Johannesburg last year. About this close?

I just don't see us having the sceam to be a really good offense. I mean we could be a consitant offense at best. No turnovers 150-200yds rushing, 150-200 passing is as good as this offense will ever be. It doesnt' have the plays or the deep thret. We may bust a long run but more than likely it will be in the 4th quartere after wearing a team down. I am not sure Bama will wear down. I do think we are the ONLY team that can beat Bama this year.

not very--les has got to hire a real OC for next year for starters, and Mett has got to develop touch on the ball--unfortunately, touch is something that you either have or don't. Mett overthrew 4 receivers that were wide open against the Aggies by at least 5-10 yards-it doesn't matter whether it was with or against the wind.
Do me a favor. Next time the wind is swirling at about 15-20mph go outside and try to throw a normal sized football as far as you can and report back.

RUN< RUN< RUN with our great backs, and hope Mett can complete a pass every once in awhile--defense and running game win games, and hopefully it will this week.
This is a formula that works so why the frick should we change it? We could have iced the A&M in the 4th when we wore their D out and were gashing them. Instead, we decided to throw the ball 3 straight times. You stick to what you do best. I don't get why people can't understand that.

Why would we be really good next year?
I just feel that the pieces are in place, at least from a personnel standpoint. some of the inexperienced guys will have gotten a yr under their belts (or the better part of a yr) and should be better for it.
I know the big concern for most is the QB. but Mett's shown some good qualities, despite the inconsistencies that come from being a first yr starter. and I believe Les wants to let him throw the ball, and barring the OL going thru flux like they did earlier this yr, I think we'll be better at doing that.
my big concern is playcalling. it'd be nice to have an OC that better used our personnel.

Not sure if you were agreeing or not with my assessment based on what you wrote above. I would use your example to precisely prove the point I was trying to make. We attempted some deep balls that were unsuccessful but it allowed us to rush for 258 yards at a 4.9 ypc clip against a stout defense. Had Mett not thrown that INT (on a short route) then the game would not have been that close even without the long completions. Complete some of those long ones and it is a huge blowout, as you said.
I guess my point is that we don't necessarily have to complete the long ones to improve our offense. Of course it would be great if we did but there are benefits that come from simply stretching the field vertically on a somewhat consistent basis.

This is a Big12 offense run in the SEC. You'll win games with it, but it will never be pretty. Most people want a beautiful offense like what Oregon or Boise State run, but it's not in Les' DNA. He is what he is; a run first, pass to get out of trouble if you can, and brutalize them on defense, coach.

Improvement every week is good and LSU is starting to show life on the offensive side of the football - from execution to play calling. NO turnovers against A&M was huge! 4th down pitch by Ware to Ford was great to see. Mett's TD pass just before half-time was a thing of beauty.
LSU led the entire 2nd half so Miles did not push the envelope so to speak (i.e. no mad hatter trickeration) but Mett did throw several long passes that just missed the mark - that was encouraging.
I think LSU is very close to being a reliable offensive machine again. May as well break out the "good stuff" for #1 team in the nation. I look forward to watching the Tigers compete and play very, very well. If the offense brings it's A+ game to the table (see Washington game replay) we will prevail. Can't wait for Sat. night in Tiger Stadium! Geaux Tigers!

I loved this. I think it was equal parts, putting it on film for Bama and actually throwing the ball on three straight downs. Mett can make the throws, hopefully he'll complete just enough on Saturday

I hope your right.. But I agree we don't have the receivers and I don't think Metts problems are magically fixed after a bye. Hopefully I'm wrong.
We have some good, but not great WRs.
Boone, OBJ and Landry can be good enough if OBJ and Landry hold onto passes that him them in the hands.
Boone is probably our best WR right now. I'm glad he stayed.
