I was responding to someone that said the 87 team couldn't hang with them. IIRC We scored on the opening drive in 86 and Tim Brown returned the ensuing kickoff. It was Holtz first year at ND.
People are using speculation against the 87 team, while excusing the 82 team losing to 2 bad teams and tying another.

Good grief. Arnsparger coached in the 80's. How did this turn into a Saban suck-up and pedicure thread ? Some of y'alls crushes on this man are just disturbing.

You have reading comprehension problems if you think it turned into a Saban suckup and pedicure thread. I bashed DiNardo for his 8 game losing streak. Had nothing to do with Saban.

Maybe, but in a one game death-match,I'd take the 1982 team.Saw most of each year's games; I was a jr in '82 and '87 was my second yr of season tickets.

with a healthy Michael Brooks, I might take 86 over either.

You could be right. I think there are cases to be made for all 3 teams.

with out Brooks in the 85 Liberty Bowl, Baylor might have won 42-0.

nah,can't take away Jefferson's punt return. 42-7.
And to think that came early in the game.
Man,it was cold that night in Memphis !

Very true statement Brooks was about the only good thing that night for LSU. Still the best linebacker I have ever seen at LSU since I began going to games in 72.
I would have to go with 82 over 87. The defense was as follows:
DL - L Marshall, R Dardar,B Elko
OLB - T Joiner, G Dubroc/R Melancon
ILB - L Williams, A Richardson
CB - J Britt, E Daniel
Safety - L Hobley, J Dale
On offense we had Risher at QB, Hilliard and James at RB, M Montz at fullback, E Martin and H Fontenot at WR. The OLine had Lance Smith and I believe Clint Berry at the tackles with several very good ones also.
87 had a very good team but I would take 82 in a close game.

So we credit the 82 team for LOSING to Nebraska, but say the 87 team wasn't as good, based on speculation?
87 was better, and clearly the closest we came to winning a MNC in the 80s.
For the life of me, I don't know how people can say with a straight face that a team that lost to TULANE (82) and Mississippi State was the best team of the decade.
All of this said:
The 87 team was really not that close. As soon as we tied Tennessee, it was over.
Miami - unbeaten regular season
OU - unbeaten regular season
Syracuse - unbeaten regular season
Florida State - one loss....to Miami
We finished 5th for a reason. It was right where we should have finished.

People don't realize that we wanted to hire spurrier and arnsparger said don't hire him. He ended up hiring spurrier and screwed LSU. This was fine when he left for Fl.

This thread has shown that this is a complete myth. Spurrier was not even a college coach at the time we hired Archer. He became the coach of Duke, not Florida, in 1987.
You're talking about a guy whose only experience was in the USFL with the Tampa Bay Bandits.
Spurrier wasn't hired by Florida until like 4 years later, in 1990.

that was our year but honestly, I don't know if we could beat FSU or Miami back then even with those teams. They were killers. They destroyed teams and didn't take the day off.

It would have been nice to see the 87 team get a better bowl opponent than South Carolina. They could have at least given us Syracuse.

This is a complete lie. LSU hired Archer in 1987, Spurrier was hired by Arnsparger at Fla in 19fricking90. 3 year later! After the 86 season Spurrier was hired by Duke. It was his first HC job outside of the USFL. Stop with tinfoil hat crap. Its not true!

It was Ohio State we tied fwiw. 13-13.
But yeah, no shot after that. Even if we go 11-0 i doubt we get better than #2.
In hind sight it was a crappy bowl opponent, but they were actually favored slightly. We couldn't have gotten SU because we didn't win the SEC. We weren't going to play A&M again in the Cotton. Orange was OU-Miami, Fiesta had FSU-NU. Gator was about as good as we could get after those sadly. Should have beaten Bama.

It' not how close, but rather how far away he put us by recommending Archer. Any idiot who hires the next coach on the cecommendation of a coach leaving to be AD as a major compeditor deserves what we got with Archer. Arnsbarger and Archer stated the downhill slide of the 90's.

That statement isn't that good, as prop 48 had much to do with the slide than any coach.
Yes Bill didn't like to recruit, but Archer was not allowed to go for big time JuCo players to replace the very thin secondary and super thin DL.
The slide of the 90's in a compo of prop 48 and Hallman missing out on a who's who of college football of the early and mid 90's.

Back on topic...
Bill in no way would have ever won a national championship at LSU...
Had he been the coach of the 1987, he would have likely finished 9-3.
He is not a Bear Bryant type, and his teams were flat for the most part game in and game out.
