If you are looking for an older crowd, try 21st Amendment or Dickson Street Pub. You could also go to the Square which is not far at all from Dickson (walking distance). There are more restaurants and bars there without college crowd. Pinpoint, Maxine's Taproom, and the Vault to name a few.

JJ's on Dickson is a really popular spot. It is a sports bar and grill. It will have a good atmosphere for your son, and y'all will be able to get a couple of drinks. Outside of that, there is a burger place in the square called Hugo's that is really good, and a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich place off of dickson called hammontrees.
