How about some optimism for 2017?

This post is not about LSU winning the NC, or the SEC in 2017. It's about our fan base being optimistic, being excited, and being willing to give Orgeron, and his coordinators time to to get things firmly in place.

I've heard plenty of negative stuff from 104.5 talk show hosts, and all these 'experts' that call themselves fans.

I watched less than a 1/2 dozen plays from the offense in the spring game in Tiger Stadium, and I know this much: Our offensive philosophy has changed.

OFFENSE:
No more lining up in the 'I' formation on every play.
I think we'll also see plays called quickly.
Plenty of shifting pre-snap as to not allow the defense to concentrate very long, and to also get a better read on the defense.
I think we'll see running backs & tight ends utilized more in the short passing game.
Yes - we'll run the ball, but you won't see us running 'off tackle' against an 8 man front.
Offense will get better with Canada's scheme as the season progresses.

DEFENSE:
Yes - we lost a lot of talent to the NFL. So what, that happens.
You lose players - you develop players.
Aranda will pick the right spot to put players, as well as choosing the correct formations.

Watch how this unit is performing by game 4 into the season. Defense may not be quiet as good as last year, but not far off.

IN GAME ADJUSTMENTS:
This is the area that killed us during the Miles era. We won because of overall talent, and sheer luck at times.

I saw improvement in the last 8 games in 2016, and I have no reason to think this won't continue.

PENALTIES:
Another area that ultimately cost us some games under Miles.
This has to, and should improve.

TIME OUTS:
Miles should hold the record for coach wasting the most time outs during a season. That aspect improved 100% in the last 8 games of 2016.

Again - I'm optimistic, but not foolishly making any predictions on wins & loses.

Geaux Tigers !!!

We have the talent and finally have an offensive coordinator that will play to his player's strengths and not force them into doing something they don't excel at.

This is just a guess, but your football knowledge is pretty specific to LSU, am I right?

LSU's strength under Miles was running but the problem was that was their only strength. We now have an OC that will hopefully develop other areas of strengths

No you are not correct, but just wondering, did I strike some kind of nerve with you?

Just seeing if there are some other positives out there that folks might want to write about, rather than the usual doom & gloom.

This never happened.

Coach Canada is still going to use the same personnel at times, two te with a fb, that people bitched about.

What adjustments were made against Bama, UF?

You do realize Les had a shite ton come from behind wins right? But yeah, no adjustments ever made.

Last two National Title teams were the most penalized in the sec, two diff coaches.

I'm optimistic that they can get to 10 wins, But for 10 years I had to listen to people say that's not a big deal, LSU is mediocre.

Good job being positive for 2017 jerk.

My positive for 2017 is that if no adjustments were made against Bama, UF it doesn't matter shite for 2017. Coach O has a new OC, RB and WR coaches.

So, which is it? Is there reason for optimism in 2017, or do they need more time?

If hoping to get to 10 wins is optimistic, then yes, LSU is mediocre. It's a shame the program was allowed to deteriorate like this. Unfortunately, we were caught in the same false conundrum that many schools artificially put themselves in: thinking they have to let a coach with past success run the program into the ground before they can replace him, even though the signs of decline are everywhere and the coach is steadfastly refusing to make any significant changes.

The narrative on the Florida game is so ridiculous. People see the score and make a lazy analysis. LSU had over 200 yards rushing and over 200 yards passing. Was it scheme that caused Guice to fumble inside the Gator 10 or to run the wrong direction? Was it scheme that caused Donte to give up a 97 yard TD pass or to fumble a KO? Despite giving up the 97 yard TD pass, LSU still outgained the Gators 423-270.

Scheme and adjustments had nothing to do with the loss. Those 4 player mistakes were the difference in a 16-10 loss and a 24-6 victory. It's really that simple.

Shouldn't there be some responsibility for the HC be it Miles, O or Saban that the players know the play and which hole to hit coming out of a timeout?

It wasn't a trick play or something that probably hadn't already been run multiple times in the game.

i'm optimistic because I'm an LSU fan and always wanting the tigers to well. I think we are now facing a new challenge: good coordinators with lower quality recruiting. With miles we had better recruiting but our offense was handicapped. This just illustrates how difficult it is to put together a program that is firing with all cylinders.

I think the OP is referring to giving the staff time to get systems implemented in the early part of the season. We have 5 games in the start of the season we "should" win before the Florida game. I expect there will be growing pains but the hope is we have time to get everyone on the same page and playing at a high level and bring a 5-0 record to Gainesville.

I never thought I would want us to beat a team more than Bama, but after last season I really want to see us stomp the Gators and Mcilwein.

Ummm coaching had almost everything to do with the Fla loss. The team wasn't mentally prepared to play from the pre game warmups to the end. That all falls on coaching.

Dude we scored 10 points at home. Stop with the excuses. Rather you know it or not, a player's mistake falls on the coaches as well. It's no different than a missed block, missed tackle, false start, etc.

Our OL dominated, our DL dominated. We beat them in every statistical category. Even our QB threw for over 200 yds which is a big deal for an LSU QB these days. They came in with a swagger which can be good or bad. It depends on the psyche of the players.

They did make mental mistakes. That's true. Mental mistakes and being mentally prepared are different though. You can have everything right in your head and still screw up. That's life.

Obviously the only thing that counts in the end is the score and I have no problem with calling the staff and O out if they are to blame, but I see this game as a loss due to player error vs coaching.
