Wins against any conference: +$1MIL/game
Losses against power 4 conference: minus $500,000/game
Losses against subpar conference: minus $1MIL/game
Lowest salary possible: $2MIL/year

Example:
9-4 season = $7MIL
15-0 season = $15MIL
2-10 season = $2MIL
6-6 season = $3MIL

10MIL guaranteed contracts for 10 years is not sustainable, IMO.

There’s going to be a change at some point. Massive guarantees for coaches will not be around forever.

There has got to be real accountability. It is not fair to the university or the donors to dish out huge sums of cash even when they crash and burn.

It’s a supply and demand situation. Huge surplus in fan base interest and desire to win a nattie & not enough championship caliber coaches on the market. They hold all the cards so they have no reason to raise accountability. I do like your scenario, just can’t imagine that ever coming to fruition.

I do not ever expect this to happen, at least not in my lifetime....but over time, something needs to happen.

I would love to see these coaches on tight games when $1MIL bucks are on the line!

I don’t think it’ll ever be what you’re proposing, but there should absolutely be less base salary with higher incentives and bonuses for performance. And have requirements to meet or the buyout is reduced (ie. buyout being reduced by 50% if you finish unranked one year or outside of the top 15 for 2 seasons in a row)

How about loss = no pay for that game.

Versus BK getting some 800k for yesterday’s coaching performance!

A loss = negative pay, take another look....
You lose 500,000 against a power 4 conference
You lose 1MIL against a subpar conference teams....

As long as football floats Athletic departments, this won’t happen. Eventually you’ll just see programs fold because they can’t compete financially.

I had a similar idea recently. My proposal is much simpler, something like this:
1 mil for every conference win
700k for power 4 non conf win
500k for other win

Bonus 1 mil for making playoffs
Bonus 1 mil for every playoff win
Bonus 2 mil for natty

Potential total compensation is +/-16 mil if you win it all.

Something like that. Pay per win is the only way forward in my opinion. Basically a commission based pay for head coaches. The better you perform, the more you get paid.

Okay let's flip that bone and chew on this scenario: Explain how this flexible non guaranteed contract works when your Athletics Dept is knee deep in national Title IX investigations that LSU found itself in 2022. If no top tier coach wants to touch you with a 10-foot pole because you're being heavily investigated for a slew of sexual and female civil rights shite across multiple sports, how does your year-to-year incentives deal work then?

Coach A calls up Coach B and proposes let's you and me split our salary down the middle no matter the outcome.

College football is just a minor league football league now and has little to do with the actual university.

It will turn into the NFL. You will have constant firings and reshuffling of the same coaches in the SEC and Big Ten.

Well, it should have never started and I have been thinking colleges would get themselves better contracts like a performance contract. Every season salary is based how how much you get paid. You win all Big you loose each one reduces your payout and too many in 4-5 year no more contract buyout

I've been saying for years the payment for these guys ain't worth it. I've been getting down-voted every time. I hope that college powers that be get their act together and stop putting a choke hold on us with these salaries. We are still paying Coach O if I remember correctly, then people wanna fire BK and pay him, and then hire a new guy. This comes to big wigs putting us money, and driving up all costs associated with prices involving going to a game one way or another. Say what you want, it's not sustainable bc not the players want some money to, a piece of the the pie.
