You are allowed to do this. Just have to move if someone with a ticket claims the seat, obviously. I don't know if I've ever sat in my assigned seat for a basketball game unless it was packed.
Also - don't get your hope up too much for a good crowd today. It's the holidays so the student crowd is probably going to be very sparse.
