I've only ever lived in the South (NC, SC, LA, and GA), and people I've met outside the South don't think I sound like it, because I grew up in a bigger city.

You are right. I listened to this multiple times today. I did not think what he said was fake at all. He just said family a little slower than maybe usual. I found nothing wrong in how he said it.

Yeah, "family" was the only weird word I heard. It's almost like if you ask someone "Do you hear XYZ?" before playing them a clip, they may be more likely to say "Yeah, I heard XYZ." Who knew?
