Your right, they just make them do it for no reason at all. It's so useless why would you want a defensive player or for that matter a player who is going to use upper body strength to rip balls out or make arm tackles have upper body strength. I see your point now.

there are plenty of drills that are more or less irrelevant for some positions and very relevant for others. all the players do the same drills. do you think it matter what an OL's 40 time is?

Which lineman would you take if they had same size weight and strength but ran two different forties? The faster or slower?

Let's say they play guard.

First, nobody makes them do it.
So all the guys who choose not to participate in bench press shouldn't be drafted?

He has plenty of game tape showing how adept he is at using his strength to rip balls out and make tackles.

Do you really think that's all it takes to evaluate talent?

I'd go by who was the better player on the field

arn't corners supposed to be able to jam receivers on the line of scrimmage at times?

if so, there is a pretty direct correlation to bench strength/upper body strength.

The one who is better where it matters.

If a team passes on him cause of this they are crazy.

Omg bench press is so overrated... A better test of strength would be squat, deadlifting or clean press or even overhead press he will never have to push someone off of him while he's on the ground

Is it kinda over rated? Yea probably but that's horrible. My current chest routine includes 5 sets of 5 with 225 and I weigh 160lbs.

He needed all his numbers to be awesome, I'm pulling for him though

Bench press doesn't equate to being able to jam receivers.

There's a reason why a lot of top flight corners don't participate in this drill, and NFL teams don't hold it against them.

Mathieu's results tomorrow and how he hadles team interviews will have much more of an impact on his draft position than these bench numbers.

225 4 times at 160lbs isn't that bad. He's probably the smallest guy in the entire draft. His game isn't stength. Honeybadger image may mislead people. His tackling technique is solid, and he's scrappy, makes up for alot of strength. I've also witnessed him get thrown back like a little girl. So it all makes sense.

It also could be that he's not in lifting shape but idk ...The kid blew up mark Ingram blocking him Into the quarterback his freshman year so he's not weak by any means.. it should've been better tho

He weighed in at 186 so he's not that small... But last year Morris Claiborne and Dre Kirkpatrick both skipped the bench press drill... ever wonder why??!

The bench press doesn't have a thing to do with football
