Found this on Perrilloux
quote:

The former LSU quarterback graduated from Jacksonville State this morning. (March 1)

Looks like he can keep his spot on NYG if he beats out Carr for 2nd string QB.

Glad to see Herb Tyler getting some love. I rank him about 5th. And that is pretty good considering you had Bert Jones, Rohan Davey, J. Russel and Hodson ahead of him. Toss up between Flynn, Mauck.

I agree with

Y.A. was a good QB at LSU for his time, but was over shadowed by the greats at other colleges while he played for LSU.

Near 30% of his TD's, throwing yards etc come from the 4 Tulane games, out of the 37 games he played in for LSU.

He played hurt his last 7 games of his Sr year at LSU.

He was a far better pro than college player. My father watched LSU games from 1939-81 and said he was one of the top 2 at Qb, Bert being the other. I have seen games since 1964 and do the reseach on old LSU players, I place Y.A. a little lower than most.

Y.A. pro career is outstanding for it's time and this in the day when you were not playing flag football(like today).

Not sure about this. Jones was A BEAST for the Colts in the Mid 70's.

Russell was all that and a bag of chips and def one of the best ever, but If we had a guy like Rohan playing QB in 2006, that might have been the difference between a sugar bowl and a nat'l championship. Intangibles!

"Jones was still a little raw out of college b/c Cholly Mac didn't know how to develop or use him.
He was a great talent, but Hodson was more polished in college"

Bingo, Mack wanted to run the ball.

I'd take Russell over Hodson. I remember Hodson but I still feel he is overated because we went so long of a span without a decent QB. People just love him so their perception is off. The same way people think Russell sucked because they hated him. I watched 60,000 LSU fans chant one more year after the Sugar Bowl so he can't be too hated. By far the most talented.

Hodson to 2000. He was the last good QB so everyone remembers him as being better than he was.

I'm 32 so I've seen mostly good QB play. Rohan was awesome but only one season. Mauck was ok but not special. Flynn was very solid. Herb Tyler was great for the type of offense we ran at the time. Russell was great talent but seemed sloppy with the ball at times (botched snaps and fumbles).

I can't speak to the QBs pre-Howard.

I just love Rohan, Russell, Flynn. In that order.

Bert Jones
Mike Miley was pretty good too, not sure if the best though.

I will never forget being at that Peach Bowl in 2000 and telling my brother if Booty starts the scond half, we are leaving. I was soooo relieved to see #6 coming in. And yes it helped to bring in Brandn Winey as well.

If you consider both their college and pro careers, Bert Jones is my pick. Also...of all the past QBs to compare, Mett reminds me more than anyone as the second coming of Bert Jones. He has that same self assured aura, stands tall in the pocket, rifle arm and other physical similarities. Finally, the coaching philosophy with a bias toward a punishing running game which reduced the passing stats for Jones in college is also eerily similar...unless of course Miles let's Mett air it out this year. But with our stable of RBs, bet it will be very similar to the Jones era...except for no 2QB system...PLEASE!!
