Will Wade on LSU's style of play: "We've got better cohesion. We've got better rhythm. We're scrappier. It's just different — we're going to look different. But I think it's going to be good. Blue collar. Gritty. Doing the little things better than we've done them."
quote:
Will Wade on Eric Gaines: "He's an unbelievable talent. He's got elite speed. There's not 10 players in college basketball that are quicker than him. Now, we've got to get him playing a little but more under control. But defensively, he's an absolute menace."
quote:
Will Wade on Xavier Pinson: "He's got a calming influence to him. He's been though it, he's a great teammate. He's got a great way about him. Our team loves him. In a short amount of time, we've built a certain amount of trust. You feel like he's in control when he's out there."
quote:
Will Wade on Darius Days: "He's been through a lot with us. He believed in us before there was a whole lot to believe in. He's able to really help us, translate things for the rest of the team."
quote:
Will Wade: "I've got a pretty good idea of what we've got. I've settled into a rotation. I feel comfortable with the eight guys that are going to be in the rotation. Now we've got to go play."
quote:
Will Wade on guards stepping up with Adam Miller out: "We feel really good about Pinson, Gaines and Murray. They've all played well in certain spurts, can play well off each other. We've got more than enough there to get the job done."

i have a feeling this will be one of Wade’s more complete and balanced team.
Losing Miller really hurts though. Was excited to see him in P&G.

I think we’ll be a mixture of his first team with that scrappiness and teamwork and then a little of the 19/20 team

My guess is it's:
Pinson
Murray
Gaines
Wilkinson
Eason
Reid
Days
Fudge
Williams and O'Neal have been hurt so havent been giving a ton. Ezewiro probably a redshirt. Colbert not there yet.
Really need Williams to get healthy to give us help at guard.

Not surprising simply given the make up the roster. Last year LSU had guys Wade would just put into iso situations (Thomas, Watford, and to a slightly lesser extent, Smart). This year they will probably have to execute more as a team than individuals.

He has great length and quickness, along with good court vision/anticipation (on both ends of the floor). He shows flashes of highlight reel ability. With him on the floor the alley-oops we saw with Tremont at PG, and that mostly went away with Smart at PG, will make a return. The big question will be can Wade mold him into a consistent player vs. just a guy who will make one "wow" play...followed by a WTF bad play?

That doesn't really coincide with the ANNUAL "this is the deepest team Wade's ever had" posts. The guy has been here 4 years. Some trends have developed. One of those is that he generally only plays a core rotation of 7-8 guys. Who is in that rotation may change throughout the season. But during the games you're probably going to see only about 8 guys in the box score.
Just guessing here, but those eight guys are probably:
Pinson
Murray
Days
Reid
Eason
Gaines
Wilkinson
O'Neal (if healthy)
Guys like Fudge, Williams, Colbert, Ezewiro are young and sill developing

We can survive the loss of Miller this year and get this done hopefully for our first Final Four appearance and basketball natty complete with championship banners and eventual jerseys hanging up in the rafters. It would help all the injuries and tape innuendo drift to faded memories finally . . . Geaux Tigers and tPear!

You know LSU has made the Final Four multiple times, right?

This always comes from the crowd of people that don't either pay attention to things Wade has pretty much always done, or just don't want to admit that's what he has done.
Before Miller injury, I did think they would go 9 and maybe play 10 in the non-conference some, but by the time SEC play would arrive, settle on a 7-8 man rotation.

Guys like Fudge,
I agree that Fudge is still raw; but I think we will see him play some to start the season, especially with Shareef still likely a couple weeks away from playing in games. So I think Fudge is the 8th guy for now.

Got damn I love me some pear. Can't wait to see them play LaTech up here in Bossier in December.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the 8th guy Wade is talking about is Fudge, not O'Neal, and thats a lot to do with O'Neal's constant injury issues. I dont think you can count on him being part of a rotation, he's in and out constantly. Him and Williams have been the ones to be missing a lot of practice in weeks behind us now...no idea where things are at right now, but because of that I dont think you can count Williams and O'Neal as part of the 8 man rotation out the gate.
Fudge is definitely raw but he was on the team as of January this year so he's less new than some of the other guys and can still give us probably a solid 10-15ish minutes a game if need be. Because we have Wilkinson, Eason, Days, Reid; we really dont need Fudge to play a ton of minutes anyways.

From what he said, it sounds like this team may be more focused on winning games, and championships. Last year's squad had some great talent, but "improving the draft status" seemed to be the #1 focus. Only at the very end of the season did those guys bear down and play all out on both ends of the floor.
I'm loving what Wade said about "cohesion" and being "scrappy". The teams that get after it encourage the fans to rally behind them.

no idea where things are at right now,
Didn't get to listen to him yet today; so I'm not sure if he gave injury updates. But as of early last week he had said both O'Neal and Williams would start running at the latter part of last week and hopefully start practicing at the latter part of this week. He had mentioned a 10-14 day window, which would have put them beginning to practice right before the start of the season.
If they came back okay and can remain healthy, then maybe we start seeing them some in games in 2 weeks; but I still don't think in a role of being a part of the official rotation. More just a few minutes here or there or at the end of large lead games.
I'm in agreement with you that it just seems as though Shareef is cursed and unlikely to ever stay consistently healthy enough to be counted on or play up to his potential.

If the rumors are true that LSU played Baylor this past weekend and may have come out on top I can see why he likes this team.
I agree Justice Williams may be needed at some point for depth. It's a long season and only having 3 true guards is not comforting.

Yep. This part here is by biggest concern with this team, especially come tournament time.
I guess the argument to this would be that by the end of last season, and even others, they really only had a 3 guard rotation.
Biggest difference this year though is that 2 of those guards were Smart and Thomas; and this year, I think Murray will be good, but he is no Thomas and I'm not sure just yet how much I trust him handling the ball a lot.

Wade seems a little more dubious than usual.
“Scrappy”
“I think it’s going to be good”
“Good in spurts”
“Get him under control”

S, do you have a link to the presser or anywhere that it has been posted? Been looking and can't find in the usual spots.
