And that is perfect for this thread because they would not be the #1 program if they were in the SEC

Good thing that they are not in the SEC. It is easier to beat up on teams like Stanford

Is Herbstreit actually humping Eddie George's back in that pic?

When's the last time they won an NC? I seem to recall that the last NC game they played in, they lost. It also appears that three (3) teams, and two from the SEC, have won NCs since USC won their last one.

Based on what criteria exactly? No. of BCS championships? Top 5, clearly. But head and shoulders above Florida, LSU, OSU, Texas? No. Better this year than Georgia or Florida? No.

I thought Herby was the main guy singing LSU's praises at the end of last season. I remember that last weekend when he was doing a late night game with Cheeseburger on ABC and all Brent could do was talk about how USC or Oklahome belonged in the game with Ohio St. Herby defended us the whole time and made it very clear it should be LSU.

Herbstreit was VERY pro SEC last year, FWIW.
Not really. Watching him fall all over himself trying to remind everyone that SC was better than LSU the night we crushed Va. Tech was pretty painful. He was working overtime trying to figure out ways to talk about a team 1,500 miles away that didn't even play that day.

He came around after that week, though. As expected, ESPN talking heads say what the audiences pay to hear; after that Va. Tech game sunk in, LSU was what people wanted to hear about. So Herbie & Co. followed along and became good little LSU/SEC fans for several weeks.

Spirit, I wouldn't knock the SEC's power if I were an Ohio State fan.

Now, all I ask from you buckeyes is that your team beat the royal hell out of that school just south of downtown Los Angeles.

Why wouldn't he be happy? He did go to/play for Ohio State....

Just because he didn't drop his ties with his former school doesn't mean he's not knowledgeable and intelligent when it comes to football.

He wasn't knocking the SEC.

He replied to somebody who stated "Herbstriet was very pro Pac-10 last season. He said they were his #2 conference in the nation."

... which leaves who at number 1?
Obviously, the SEC.

USC and LSU are the two top teams this decade, but all-time USC has way more bowl victories. The Trojans have done good or decent against anyone in postseason.

LSU has been owned by Nebraska in bowl games to the tune of 4-0.

ESPN College Gameday=professional wrestling.

I'm not sure what these guys really think vs. what they're told to spew in a production meeting.

Re: the VT game, I remember Herbie talking to BM in hushed tones as LSU proceeded to annihilate VT. I think Herbie and BM were genuinely in awe of what they were witnessing and didn't know how to handle it. They assured themselves SC was still #1, but I think their faith was shaken at that point.

Give me Mike Patrick and Todd Blacklege any day. Todd seems to try to be very fair in his analysis.
