Why would I bother to argue with someone who questions whether it’s a college coaches job to instill character in young men?
The very thought of that question shows your lack of intelligence.
Of course it's your choice. However maybe I can clarify about the character thing. I believe most men at that age already have the character built in them at childhood. In my experience, coaches have had little control of their player's character.
Just think of all those players LSU has have with bad character issues who were great or even superior athletes they ended up losing off the team? Cecil Collins comes to my forefront. (There are more recent ones) Instead, a great head coach demands the best of his players and weeds the rest out. By focusing on forging and not positiving coach thry may be lucky enough to bring a change of character in them from the demands. My goodness they are not in Little League anymore. They are men, young but men! I do see a future where the Head coaches will seek better characters in recruits than just abilities. It will save them a lot of money and resources in the end!

I feel cheated that I was the 199th down vote. Would have been honored to make the score 200 to zero.

Our number 1 issue over the past couple years has been character and culture. It's been toxic. He is exactly what we need.

Then you have zero clue where the majority of these kids come from. 18 year olds are fully formed in their characters, when they often come from broken homes? You’re an idiot

Orgeron would punch himself in the face and smash stuff pregame to fire the team up. And then we would lose to sissy blue uniforms, lose by 4 TDs to Kentucky, get runover by Troy and Miss State because those rah rah speeches don't mean shite if you didn't build physicality and game conditioning for 3 months in the summer.

"Positive Coaching" doesn't mean the Coach can't breath fire when appropriate. I swear, it seems like most of the Ranters have never played sports before except maybe T-Ball or soccer when they were 5.
Are you kidding me? My gosh, positive coaching has been a signal for don't yell at my kid or we will sue you, the league and everyone else who didnt report it! It's caused leagues to cover themselves so much that if a coach disagrees with the PC philosophy they fire him. I have seen it in Neighbor Leagues first hand!
BTW I played College football till I was injured.

However, is it the job of a head coach to instill character in players?

OP legitimately might get 1000 downvotes before getting an upvote, which is deserved. Out of all the stupid threads on the rant, this one might top them all.

These guys nowadays dont care about coaching and developing, they look for easy ways to win.
So, please just shut up. You have no idea what you are talking about.
A positive, demanding, loving, teaching, involved coach can change a players life and performance in very short order. You do that with 100 players and you create a force to be reckoned with.

Kelly is a proud lifelong liberal. It was mentioned in one of the first articles written about him here. So we are going to have that “liberal playbook” for as long as he is here.

Great response! I couldn't agree with most of what you said. I extrapolated the positive coaching as a possible slip of the tough for reasons I conveyed. I do hope you are correct in his intentions/competency. Although we will all see in time by the results if it is what you say or if I did catch something early. I am rooting for him but would not be surprised if the liberals in this country got to him. No head coach will win if they see demands as demeaning and that is truth. Again, for the sake of this country I hope your assessments are correct! Thanks for taking your time to post your reply!

You definitely don't understand the dynamics of young athletes like you think you do. Most every recruit to Lsu has been the best player on their team from peewee football thru highschool. Most have have plenty of talent to get them by on talent alone. Most have come from less then idea homes sometimes lacking adult leadership. There are exceptions of kids you made it to the LSU based on hard work but most are there based on natural ability.
But like I said, everyone in the SEC is talented. The league is choke full of players that were the best on their previous team.
To be a champion is a thin line. Lots of young men have to.be taught what it takes to be a champion. They have to be taught to pay attention to details. They have to be taught to eat properly, rest properly, attend to academics properly.
Kelly knows this. He is in the business of producing the best athletes possible and part of that is character development.
It seems you think 18 to 21 year old kids should have the maturity of 35 year old men. And that's just not how it works. These are still young adults that need lots of oversight to develop the character needed to be successful.

Hey I never said the characters were all good. But what's inside is formed. To bring it back to the correct content. Do you believe positive kitten gloves will help change them for the better. My point is stop concerning yourself with their characters and speak on accountability and outcomes. The faster any player gets that the best chance the character transforms! And even then, sadly, that doesn't matter.
