Jerald Hawkins Getting Day-Three Grades
Updated Feb. 11, 2016
By Charlie Campbell - @draftcampbell

In recent years, there have been a lot of early-entry players going to the NFL when they should have returned to school. One player who fits that criteria this year is LSU offensive tackle Jerald Hawkins, who was the Tigers' left tackle after playing right tackle in the previous seasons. In speaking with multiple evaluators, they are down on Hawkins and have not given him good draft grades.

Sources from multiple teams have said that they graded Hawkins on day three. They say he lacks strength and doesn't have power in his base. He plays with poor leverage, gets fooled and is bulled around, and they think he's a backup-quality player in the NFL. They his best attribute is he has pretty good feet. He also has length, so teams feel there are some tools to work with, which gives him a draftable grade.

A few teams said they had a fourth-round grade on Hawkins. Another said they had him as a fifth- or sixth-rounder who is a developmental backup. Perhaps another year at LSU would have given Hawkins time to get stronger for the NFL. It looks like Hawkins will be in for a long wait come draft weekend.

I think he's a day 2 guy but what do I know. The truth is I don't criticise him because he's been starting for so long for us. The notion that THIS year he's going to improve that much is far from a given. He might be near his ceiling honestly and with so little time to cash in, his clock is ticking.

I still think him going this year was the right move for him.

Surprised at this - he would have been going into his 5th year here; would have though he'd be thoroughly Moffitized

He is going to go to the combine and move up like Trai Turner. He is a good athlete and will test very well.

This past season probably due to injury he left a lot to be desired in pass protection.

The whole line including Hawkins did not play well at all. Especially during towards the end of the season

Been that way for a while. LSU seems to struggle towards the end of the season.

4th year junior ready to earn close to 500K IF he makes a team. Don't really know his family/financial situation...wish him the best of luck!

Agreed. I have been wondering has he become complacent or lost the ear of the players because I don't see it anymore. We have been getting pushed around by other teams in the West for sure especially in the 3 losses last season.

He's going to shoot up draft boards once scouts see him at the combine. His athleticism is his best trait. Think Terron Armstead of the Saints.

Not surprising with Moffit on the staff. Happens year after year with our guys. Moffit needs to get back in the weight room and motivate and teach these guys.

Next to Peveto, he needs to go

Bama and Arkansas have been throwing us around like rag dolls lately. Sick of it.

Something is not happening in that weight room that used to happen. That's apparent.

He graduated and wasn't going to improve with another year while risking injury.

He made the right decision for him and his family.

Well since 2010 only 4 of our early departures have not recorded at least 1 NFL start..

Sam Montgomery
Chris Faulk
Michael Ford
Anthony Johnson

Cheers to hoping he lands on a team and bust arse

I just hope Chidi Okeke, George Brown or Ethan Pocic can take over and make LT a strength this year.
