I guess this is the official confirmation we have been waiting for

Wilson Alexander Twitter

Safeties Kary Vincent (track) and Maurice Hampton Jr. (baseball) will not participate in spring football practices as they play other sports, Ed Orgeron said.

I’m glad he will be able to get consistent playing time if he can stay healthy

I will admit I was completely wrong on this one. I thought for sure he was going to go since it was his first year. Props to coach O for not being the control freak he could have been on this.

It would be dumb for Hampton to do so if he truly wanted to have an impact on the baseball team. Because of football he already missed all of fall baseball camp and was really behind (in terms of baseball reps) when he joined the team in mid-January. Particularly, as a freshman, he needs all the reps/game action he can get to adjust to this level of competition. Splitting time with the football team for a month would essentially erase all of the strides he's made thus far in baseball and cause him to basically start over again in mid April when he returned full-time. By that point is the baseball team really getting all that much out of him?

Skipping spring is a good move for him if he wants to be a real contributor for the baseball team.

That and Coach Eaux just said a few minutes ago that it what he promised MO and he was keeping his word to him.

He then thanked Maurice for fudging on Eaux's first pitch at the baseball game and making it look better than it really was.

The kid was offered $1.8 million to play professional baseball this season but he chose to come to LSU instead. You can bet there were some concessions made by the football staff to get him on campus. If LSU football would have refused to allow him a full college baseball season, he easily could have taken the money.

Say it again, $1.8 million. At LSU, we are used to losing kids to professional sports over a guarantee of 5 or low 6 digits. This kid turned down life changing money to wear the purple and gold.

I was just guessing, but I was on the opposite end of you on this. I assumed that O realized that Hampton would likely have not been at LSU playing football, without baseball. He would have taken millions and been on some minor league team right now. This was likely discussed during his recruiting, and decided on.

And yes, props to O for putting the kid first. He doesn't strike me as a, you are going to do what I say or else, type of coach.

The football only people are going to be pissed about this.

But if he wasn’t coming to LSU on a football scholarship he is likely a first round pick and is offered more than 1.8 million

For the record, this is one of the rare times I am excited about being wrong.

I thought he would be the starting centerfield right by the sec tournament even with him going play football. This speeds that process up for sure.

I get where he is coming from and Hampton could have went pro easy but he isn’t at LSU because of baseball.

He is at LSU because of football. Football is allowing him to also play baseball. If it was just about baseball he wouldn’t be at LSU right now.

I feel like it’s a wise and generous decision by Coach O.
I’m pretty sure you can be on a football scholarship and participate in baseball and/or track, but you can’t be on a baseball or track scholarship and play football. It’s a weird rule but I get why it is there.

None of this was under his control. He was dependent upon coach O allowing it.

Jalen Hurts probably still feels that hit Hampton gave him in the playoffs. I don't think I ever saw Hurts get hit like that before. And Hurts is a big dude.

what that does is setup legitimacy in the future when you recruit another kid that plays both and it is important to play both to that kid... Especially someone like a QB that could be a stud on the diamond as well..
