Probably.

But I think it won't become available till halfway through the season anyway.

In this strain of swine flu, pretty much the entire virus has never infected a human until now. So NO ONE has an immune response to it. This is very important...even if you assume mortality/hospitalization rates the same as the "regular flu," the sheer number of people infected if there is no vaccination would overwhelm the health care system
So the H1N1 virus hasnt been around and infecting people since 1918?

There are atleast 10 different forms of influenza A. Not to mention influenza B&C.

Also the vaccine for H1N1 is killing as many people as the virus is. I bet we missed that too

Not true.

The current H1N1 virus is a genetic cousin of the more virulent H1N1 "Spanish flu" virus of 1918.

Older people may have immunity to the new H1N1 swine flu virus because of possible exposure the other H1N1 flu strain circulating prior to 1957. That explains why the new swine flu outbreak is striking a large number of children and young adults. Actually "swine flu" is misleading. It is a mix of swine, bird and human virus.

Where did I say that?

The 1918 virus has become of of the strain lineages that is common flu now.

One thing to keep in mind: as specific as it sounds, H1N1 is a general classification. Just because two viruses have that classification doesn't mean they are the same.

How is something that isn't even out yet killing 3 thousand people?

Dear Students,

As recent concern over Type A Influenza has been expressed, LSU wishes to provide guidance to those students impacted by this illness. While there is no cause for panic or fear, the University believes the best way to combat the spread of Influenza is through education and information.

Guidance for students diagnosed with Type A Influenza

· Refer to the University’s policy relevant to class absences (PS-22) which can be viewed at: LINK .

· You should make arrangements as if you will be absent for at least one week of classes. This means coordinating note takers and keeping in contact with your professors.

· Email each of your professors indicating your diagnosis and the date on which you tested positive. (Email addresses may be found by logging in to PAWS and clicking on Directory Information.) In the email, you may ask each professor if he/she can assist in acquiring a volunteer note taker in each class. It will be your responsibility to contact the note taker.

· Review your course syllabi so you are aware of the make-up policy for each class. You should follow-up with each professor when you are able to resume your class schedule to discuss missed assignments and missed instruction.

· In addition to contacting your professors, it is suggested that you also inform your academic dean’s office. Staff members may be able to provide additional support and direction to affected students.

Guidance for students experiencing flu-like symptoms

Students experiencing flu-like symptoms should contact the LSU Student Health Center at 225-578-6271. The Student Health Center is open Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 8:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. (medical clinics and pharmacy only).

As preventive measures, please make sure to follow the CDC’s guidelines:

· Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue away after use.

· Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.

· Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

· Try to avoid close contact with people who are sick.

· If diagnosed with any type of flu, stay home from work or school, if possible, and limit contact with others.

LSU continues to take a proactive approach by monitoring the situation through the Emergency Operations Center. Additionally, the Student Health Center is prepared to provide medical treatment to students in need of assistance. For additional information and updates, please visit LINK .

No, it isn't. The ONLY genetic similarities with a strain endemic in humans is the gene encoding an RNA polymerase.

The H1N1 is referring to almost the methodology of affinity and infection rather than a genetic semblance.

The hemagglutinin genes come from pigs in the US (and has not been previously observed in human infection), and the matrix protein and neuraminidase genes have also not been found in human viruses, except they come from European forms of swine flu.
